As a big guy myself, I kind of gravitate towards the thick-bodied players who can get it done on the basketball court. Here is a look at some of those big bodied standouts, which I like to call my “All-Beef Team.”
Guards-Wings
Terrell Kabala 6’1″ Victory Ministry 17U (Webb City ’20): Athletic point guard who can score at all three levels while also being explosive enough to dunk of people. Also an excellent defender who takes a lot of charges. Recently committed to Arkansas-Fort Smith.
Rashad Weekly-McDaniels 6’0″ SW IL Jets 17U (Trinity ’20): Excellent scoring lead guard who actually lost about 20 pounds, which has helped his quickness and athleticism. He gets buckets in a multitude of ways. Has a final list of Central Missouri, Western Illinois and UW-Milwaukee.
Dylan Branson 6’5″ MoKan Elite 17U (Mehlville ’20): All-around player who was a starter on MoKan’s Peach Jam championship team. A strong bucket-getter with elite passing ability who can make teammates better. Can score in the post, take defenders off the bounce and hit perimeter jumpers.
Justice Thoma 6’4″ Semo Silver Bullets (Cape Notre Dame ’20): Thick wing player with a versatile skill set. Gets into the lane well and has a very potent mid-range game, but he will also knock down the open 3-pointer. He will also show you some explosiveness when he attacks the rim and dunks it.
Luther Burden 6’0″ Brad Beal Elite 16U (Cardinal Ritter ’22): A high-level football standout who brings that kind of toughness to the basketball court. He enjoys the contact as he attacks the basket whenever possible, but he can also knock down perimeter jumpers. Has about two-dozen high-major college football offers.
Dominic Dabney 5’9″ (Milan ’20): A small, but physical point guard who plays a bumper cars style of basketball. He’s tough and he doesn’t mind getting into the lane and playing through contact while also rebounding and diving for loose balls.
Forwards-Posts
Elijah Bishop 6’6″ Team Ramey CCM (Soldan ’20): A four-year varsity starter with a thick body and a textbook game of fundamentals in the low-post area. He has drop steps, jump hooks and a nice turnaround jumper on the baseline. He has also added a 3-point stroke off the catch to his offensive game.
Keyren Spiller 6’4″ KC Run GMC 16U (Center ’20): An all-around combo forward who is a matchup problem with his ability to handle the ball and muscle his way to the basket. Has a nice combination of physical strength and versatile ball skills.
Matt Schark 6’4″ (Francis Howell ’20): A top baseball prospect who is also a standout basketball player with his unique skill set. He is tough around the basket with his big body and post moves, but he is also a dangerous 3-point shooter who can really stretch the defense.
Mujtaba Alkhaldi 6’6″ Missouri Basketball Club (Fort Zumwalt North ’21): A very skilled post player with good footwork and fundamentals in the lane. He has the ability to score with both hands around the basket. He’s strong and can establish solid post position against just about anybody he plays against.
Lucas Morrison 6’9″ (Salem ’21): A massive young post player about 290-300-pounds who I saw for the first time at the CoMo Shootout. Was very impressed with his soft shooting touch and ability to make his free throws. He just moved people around the lane like he was moving furniture.
Jacob Davis 6’6″ Missouri Mavericks Premiere (NE Cairo ’20): Got my first look at this big lefty at the Hardwood Classic II in Lawrence. He has solid athleticism, but I like his meat and potatoes game around the basket where he he is a very effective scorer around the basket.
John Wilson 6’6″ Knights Basketball Academy (St. Charles West ’21): A big, burly offensive lineman who knows how to use his body around the basket. He’s very hard to move when he establishes his turf in the lane and he can score with a nice drop step. He is also a tough rebounder.
Donnie Brown, Jr. 6’6″ Semo Bulls (New Madrid Central ’21): A big post player from the boot-heel who operates well in the lane and out to the high post area where he has a nice shooting touch from both spots. He moves well and does a good job on the boards.
