Continue ReadingThe summer has ended and college is about crank up around the country. This means that the class of 2019 is about to begin their careers on the next level. Some 2020 prep prospects are also getting into the college theme by making their commitments also. We will take a look at some late signings and commitments from the 2019 class as they move into the world of college basketball and the early 2020 commitments.
2019 Top 10 Signings
While we plenty of signings on the first couple of days, Prep Hoops #2 Jordan Wright waited awhile before picking Vanderbilt to continue his career. Franklinton wing Tylan Pope decommitted from Stephen F. Austin and will play at Tulane under new coach Ron Hunter. He will be joined at Tulane by Sophie B. Wright, 6’7″ wing Charlie Russell. However, the biggest surprise was Jacoby Decker, the 2019 4A player of the year, deciding to stay close to home. Decker will begin his basketball career at Panola College in Carthage, Texas. Decker was the last top 10 player to sign.
2019 Ranked Players
Of the ranked players outside of the top 20, the Wilson twins from Rayville are probably the ones with the highest profile. The 2x 2A champions will be playing at separate junior colleges in Mississippi. JaMichael will hit the hardwood for East Central Community College while twin JaMarkus will be playing at Copiah-Lincoln. Two time class B champion Gianni Nelson will take his talents north of the border to University of Arkansas Cossatot. Coach Brad Phillips is resurrecting the program and has been looking for talented players such as Nelson to help him do it. Rummel combo guard Donte Mitchell will be staying close to home as he will suit up for the Delgado Dolphins this coming season. The biggest signing was Kaalas Roots to LSU-Alexandria. Many did not expect Roots to play again. However, LSUA honored their offer and we will see what happens.
2020 Commitments
Three of the top 15 players in the state have already made commitments to programs before their 2020 school year even began. Prep Hoops #1 player Reece Beekman has committed to play with the defending national champs from the University of Virginia. #2 player Jalen Cook followed Beekman’s announcement when he signed with LSU just a few days later. Rounding out the early commitments was D’Marcus Hall. He made the decision to stay within the state a play for the Warhawks of Louisiana-Monroe. If this is a sign of what is to come, the 2020 class will definitely be a decorated one.
Other notable 2019 signings would be to Shreveport players staying home. Bobby Baker, from Southwood High, will play at SUSLA and Parkway’s Joe Wiggins will play at Centenary College.
Commitments may come at anytime of the year. Look for the first signings to happen in November during the early signing period (November 13-20).
