This week I was able to attend workouts held by Parkview and Centennial. In the coming weeks, more teams will be seen as we get ready for the 2019-2020 season. Here are some observations from those two workouts.
Parkview
On Tuesday night, I stopped by Parkview’s workouts, in which Allen Terrell, Miles Kelly, Jason Edwards, and Asher Woods participated.
With a strong core of guards, the Panthers should have success this winter. I was able to see them multiple times throughout June and they seem to be trending upward and heading in the right direction.
2021 guards Miles Kelly and Jason Edwards look determined to have breakout junior seasons in 2019-2020. Kelly was particularly good in this workout, hitting shots consistently both from mid-range and beyond the arc, along with showing some ability to create off the dribble. He is a long, smooth shooter who continues to make strides in his game.
Jason Edwards wasn’t shooting his best to start the workout but did get on track as things progressed in the session. He is one of the more confident players I saw during the travel season and is in a much better situation to show his skills now with transferring to Parkview. Edwards has scorer’s mentality and does not let his size stop him from producing.
While Allen Terrell and Asher Woods may not put up numbers like Kelly and Edwards this year, they’ll still be important pieces for the Panthers. Both showed they can knock down shots on a pretty regular basis with decent touch. You can only take so much from a workout, but Terrell and Woods seem like they are going to be some energy and scrappiness to the team and will do the little things that are needed.
Centennial
The Knights worked out on Thursday morning, with Logan Turner, Kyle Duncan, Kaleb Jordan, and Mansir Williamson coming in for the early session. Turner has shown he can score in bunches in each of his first 2 years of high school, and will have to carry a heavy load once again for the Knights. However, I am also interested to see what type of contributions he makes in other areas. If Turner is able to impact the game in a variety of ways, it will help Centennial greatly.
Kyle Duncan looks hungry and ready for a productive junior season. He was good throughout June for the Knights and seems to have improved his jumper even more. With the Knights lacking size, Duncan will have to do some of the dirt work down low, which he doesn’t seem to mind. He should provide a nice boost with his energy and toughness.
A small but speedy guard, Kaleb Jordan is the senior leader for the Knights. He takes on most of the team’s ball-handling responsibilities and is also capable of scoring. Jordan has an effective jumper and is able to use his quickness to penetrate the lane and get shots up to the rim before help-side defenders come.
Just a freshman, Mansir Williamson will be one to look out for this year and down the road. He’ll have the opportunity to contribute immediately and looks ready to do so. He has solid form and is fairly consistent on his lefty shot, an aspect he didn’t show in June even while ending the month on a strong note at the NCAA Team Camp. I think he’ll have a solid freshman campaign.
