As we prepare for another season, be on the lookout for the upcoming Top 250 Expos in your region. In the mean time, the staff will be hitting you with several preseason nuggets. Below we highlight 12 of the toughest backcourts you will find in Northern Virginia. The list is organized in alphabetical order by team.
BISHOP IRETON
James Berry and Sese Mobutu are currently the best local backcourt that no one is talking about. These two have steadily improved and are playing their best ball heading into 2020.
BISHOP O’CONNELL
The Knights have a tough 1-2 punch in Marcus Dockery and Brayon Freeman. Impressive underclassmen Paul Lewis and Mason So could potentially carry the torch in the future.
EPISCOPAL
Darius Johnson is one of the toughest guards you will find in the DMV, and he has plenty of help. Jack Fitzpatrick, John Loughlin, Garrett Johnson, Bryce Steele, Lou Hutchinson, and Charlie Jackson should all provide plenty of support.
FAIRFAX
The Rebels have one of the more disciplined backcourts in the area. Christian Lewis has taken massive strides in his development. Ricky Peters will guard the opposing team’s best player on a given night. Josh Abtew can hit shots and make winning plays on both ends. Daniel Mbangue might be the team’s best ball-handler.
JOHN PAUL THE GREAT
DJ Slaughter, Coretez Lewis, and Latief Mustafaa are three underrated guards who can play at a high level. You can expect them to propel the Wolves to many wins.
MIDDLEBURG ACADEMY
DeMarcus Spivey is a 2020 sleeper who can make shots at a high level. Isaiah Folkes is a major addition to this squad, and Cavan Reilly is a dead-eye shooter with range.
PAUL VI
Duke commit Jeremy Roach is arguably the best point guard in the country. Dug McDaniel and Trevor Keels are two experienced guards who play with pace and intelligence. Will Paige is the ultimate glue guy. DeShawn Harris-Smith and Marvin Brimage Jr. are two incoming freshmen to watch.
POTOMAC
Caleb Satchell could be in for a breakout season. Anthony Jackson is a big time shot maker, and Kyle Honore will be a key player this season and beyond.
RIVERSIDE
Simon Weeren and Beau Everett are two defensive-minded guards who compliment each other well. They will be a tough duo to hang with.
SOUTH COUNTY
Andre Speight is a candidate for every award you can think of. Cody Kellem, Xavian Myles, and William Wilson add plenty of depth and versatility to the Stallions backcourt.
ST. STEPHENS & ST. AGNES
Xavier Lipscomb is a flat-out winner. Jared Cross is coming into his own. Lamumba Howard is a tough defender. Eric Gordon can stretch the floor consistently. Garrett Brennan is an up and comer to watch.
WASHINGTON-LEE
Anthony Reyes and Marino Dias are two potent shot makers who can get hot very quickly.
