Shooters are self- explanatory, the’re catching it and looking to hoist. Athletes are trying to get into the lane, but wouldn’t mind finishing a lob or two. This year in Nevada, we’re fortunate to have several high level wing players that should make an impact on both the local and college scene. PH takes a look at some of the top wings in the state.
Noah Taitz 6’3 SG Bishop Gorman 2020 – Taitz is a combo wing. He is thought of as a stationary shooter, however he’s a better than average athlete with several bodies under his belt. More efficient off catch and shoots, but because he’s such a threat, his pump fakes receive maximum credibility, opening driving lanes to the basket. Taitz is a high major recruit with offers from Stanford, Washington, BYU, and St Mary’s to name a few.
Julian Strawther 6’6 SF Liberty 2020 – Strawther looks like a college wing. 6’6 powerful, explosive run and jump athlete. There are few prep players that have the size and strength to challenge him. As explosive as he is, Strawther is a volume shooter, who can get hot in an instant. He proved that last year putting up 48 against another top C/O 2020 wing Josh Christopher. He will be taking his trigger to Gonzaga next year.
Anthony Swift 6’6 SF Desert Pines 2021 – Swift falls into the athlete category. If he’s sprinting the lane, it’s to dunk on you. Aggressive and uber competitive, Swift plays in attack mode from the opening tip. He’s trying to get downhill and finish at the rim. He’s an elite rim runner, who’s also scores off put backs and loose balls. He already has a plethora of offers. With two more years to add, muscle to his frame, he could certainly end up being a high major recruit.
Cameron Kimble 6’4 SG Clark 2021 – I have been watching a lot of film on Kimble lately. The more and more I watch of him, the more I start thinking he is about to have a monster year. He falls into the shooter category, however it’s not just catch and shoots with him. He can put it down and create a variety of shots for himself. Kimble has one and two dribble pull ups, and can shoot if coming off screens. It wouldn’t shock me to see him lead the state in scoring this season.
Mwani Wilkinson 6’4 SG Bishop Gorman 2020 – Wilkinson is an elite run and jump athlete. He’s a scorer not a shooter, but he scores in a variety of ways. Downhill in transition is his strength, but he’s also an elite offensive rebounder that can sky over larger players. One of the rare guys on this list that is actually better on the defensive end, than the offensive. Wilkinson is a high major prospect, with offers from Texas Tech, UNLV and Vanderbilt to name a few.
Glenn Taylor 6’5 SF Cheyenne 2021 – Taylor is an athlete, but he also can be described as a playmaker. His best skill is his ability to penetrate, draw two and hit the open man. He has a great basketball IQ and understands how to use angles and contact to get his shot off. He’s a scholarship athlete, but it will be interesting to see if he improves his outside shooting. If he does expect more offers to come his way.
Will Mclendon 6’4 SG Bishop Gorman 2021 – For some reason, I have a hard time envisioning Mclendon as a shooter. That’s on me though, because all he does is make shots. Part of my hangup with his shooting is his form, his elbow is slightly in, making for an awkward delivery. But he releases it from the same point every time and most importantly he makes it. Mclendon is most comfortable shooting off rhythm dribbles, but he also is efficient off catch and shoots. He is a high major recruit with offers from Arizona, Washington St, UNLV and Texas Tech to name a few.
