However the class of 2021 brings in a new wave of Point Guards, capable of scoring when needed, but also with the ability to distribute to others. PH takes a look at the skills of these unique playmakers in the C/O 2021.
Combo Masters – These players have the ability to get buckets as well as run the team.
#1 Jaden Hardy 6’4 (Coronado) – Hardy may be the countries best PG in the class of 2021. He displays a great understanding of keeping his team playing at a pace and tempo that allows them an opportunity to be successful. He has the size to see over smaller guards, and the athleticism to blow by and finish over larger ones. He is one of the few prep combo guards that I’ve seen that is actually better at the 1 than the 2.
#15 Craig Comanche 6’1 (Centennial) – Comanche is undersized to play the 2, however he has a knack for scoring the basketball. He’s great in isolation situations and has a patent spin move that he goes to. He is still learning the point guard position, but he has the ball handling and IQ to be effective. He has the first part down, which is the ability to draw 2. The next evolution will be dumping the ball off to his teammates for easy buckets.
Jitterbugs – Short quick and impossible to stay in front off.
#2 Zaon Collins 6’0 (Bishop Gorman) – Collins fits this to a T. He is a blur, and capable of breaking down any defense. He’s an excellent run and jump athlete that understands how to use the rim for protection from shot blockers. He also knows when to turn it over and dunk it. Playing for both Vegas Elite and Bishop Gorman, has provided him with great experience of running the show as a pure PG.
#9 Kobe Stroughter 5’11 (Liberty) – The lefty doesn’t have the same foot speed as Collins, however he’s still effective at breaking down defenders and collapsing the defense. He’s a good shooter, which forces defenders to crowd him. When he gets into the lane, he has shown the ability to be a willing and creative passer.
Maestros – Pure point guards. You can call them throwbacks. They run the show and keep the team organized.
#7 Keshon Gilbert 6’2 (Durango) – Gilbert keeps the ball on a string. I could easily have put him into the jitterbug category, however his ability from the neck up makes him more of a Maestro. He makes the next pass, as flawlessly as he makes difficult ones. All players on my Maestro list must have a solid understanding of time score and situation. For my money Gilbert understands this better than anyone in the class of 2021.
#18 Joseph Summers 5’11 (Carson City) – Summers gets overlooked because he plays up North, however he is a prototypical PG. He can shoot it, and is crafty enough to get by defenders. He also understands the difference between a great shot and the best shot for his team. I would love to see what he could do with more talent around him, because In my opinion his greatest strength is his ability to make his teammates better.
