The backbone of Muskegon’s roster stems from a backcourt that features two future college guards.
The Big Reds’ backcourt combined for 34 points per game, which is a luxury any high school coach would be thrilled to have. Let’s take a further look at the two key pieces in Muskegon’s backcourt that will lead the Big Reds this winter.
Jarvis Walker, 6’2” Guard, 2020
Jarvis played his first season with Muskegon last year after transferring in from Muskegon Mona Shores. Jarvis handled the transition with ease, leading the Big Reds with 18.7 points per game, 5.1 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.2 steals. He was also lethal from three point range, shooting 48% from beyond the arch. While his scoring ability spreads the defense and allows his teammates to see more open looks, his physicality and aggressiveness on the defensive end is what separates him from other guards his size. Jarvis recently committed to play for Purdue Fort Wayne on August 3rd after receiving interest from a contingent of other Division One schools.
Vern Nash III, 5’10” Point Guard, 2020
Vern is the floor general for the Big Reds and is well equipped to lead Muskegon in his senior season. As a junior, Vern averaged 15.6 points per game, 4.5 assists, and 3.5 rebounds, while shooting 46% from the floor, 39% from three, and 91% at the free throw line. Vern has an ultra-quick first step that typically results in bad news for those defending him. Couple his quickness with his dribbling and shooting ability, and overall poised demeanor and it’s easy to see why he’s one of the top point guards in the 2020 class in the area. Vern committed to play for Saginaw Valley State University on August 20th, picking the Cardinals over a handful of other suitors.
Now that Jarvis and Vern have announced where they intend to play at the next level, expect the focus of Muskegon’s back court to be heightened on making as deep of a run in the state tournament as possible.
