Coming into the camp, I knew that Mejia was at the absolute top tier of shooters for his class, but over the past year, he has gotten much better with ball handling duties. I thought that he looked best in the Pick n’ Roll, and I definitely wouldn’t have said that a year ago. He saw the floor much better than I was expecting, and has gotten to the point where he can be a reliable secondary ball handler.
Charquez Owens 6’3 Ouachita
This was my first time seeing Owens play without ‘19 Ouachita grad Paul King next to him, and I walked away really impressed with his game. He was an absolute bull on his way to the rim, and simply flung smaller defenders off him on the way to get a bucket. If anyone was capable of stopping him from getting to the paint, I certainly didn’t see it. He also showed a consistent jump shot from deep. Overall he was one of the top performers of camp.
Bentravin Phillips 5’9 Lafayette
Phillips is undersized, but that didn’t stop him from getting wherever he wanted on the court. He has a super quick first step that no one was able to keep up with. His vision looked much improved, and make a handful of passes that in the past, he simply just would not have made. He is as shifty as a ball handler as you will find, which in combination with his incredibly deep range on his jump shot made him tough to handle on the offensive end all day.
Terrian Roy 6’2 Ville Platte
Coming into the camp, I knew that Roy was a really good scorer, but I walked away thinking he has a much more versatile game. He has become a much better passer, both in the half-court and in transition. He also showed off an impressive ability to cut behind the defense and was able to get a handful of buckets that way. Overall, I came away thinking he had really improved his basketball IQ since the last time that I had seen him.
Rayvond Brown 6’2 Istrouma
If there is one thing that stood out to me about Brown’s game over the course of camp, it is that he can shoot the absolute cover off the ball. He was one of the top shooters that I saw all day, and he has a quick enough release that even when you know he’s going to be shooting the ball, there isn’t much the defense can do.
