Jasen’s lane agility time was just ok when measured against the pack, but encouragingly fast when considered against his age group.
Brooks is a better than average athlete and better than average basketball player just now entering his freshman academic year. Brooks made the All-Star Team. In fact, Jasen was the highest-rated 2023 of the event.
There are several aspects to Brooks’ game that hint at greatness. He changes directions very well. During the All-Star Game, Brooks was standing on the elbow and noticed a three-point attempt coming from the wing. Within a wink the freshman was outstretching his hand in the shooter’s sightline. Brooks made up three small steps in the time it took the shooter get the basketball from his hip to his forehead. Brooks is very quick when he reacts.
Defensively, Jasen Brooks needs to be more than a reactor. He stands to upright and doesn’t get in the best position off-the-ball. Ideally, he would get his hips and butt lower for the duration of the defensive set.
He dribbles fine and shoots ok. Both could be good in time. The 5-foot-10 guard rebounds well for a young guard. He can move his feet on offense. Given time he should be able to defend the 1 or the 2. Rebounding looks to be a plus attribute.
As solid a player as Jasen Brooks currently is, he plays (at least at this event) like he is unaware of his potential to dominate. Take in consideration his youth and fledgling development relative to the 2020’s and 2021’s. Likely, the age difference and a slight level of respect accounted for Jasen’s deference. The right coach will be able to summon Jasen’s best. His best can be very, very good.
