Performer of the Week
Silas Demary Jr.
2022 guard Silas Demary Jr. (Millbrook) was one of the standout performers for the Cavaliers, posting 36 points, 28 in the second half in a comeback victory over the Lakers. Demary put on a stellar performance for his squad. He took over down the stretch, drawing fouls and draining shots on their way to an 81-80 comeback victory.
Team of the Week
Clippers
2021 guard Brandon Huffstetler (Garner Magnet) and his Clippers squad showed off quite the attack with their six-man squad in the opening week. The Clippers went 2-0 in Week 1, with Huffstetler averaging 16.0 points per game and 2022 point guard Dakota Gordon (Enloe) averaging 25.0 points per game.
Huffstetler and Gordon made up quite the tandem in the backcourt. Huffstetler was a knockdown 3-point shooter and Gordon was the playmaker at point guard.
In the opening game, Huffstetler and Gordon combined with teammate Carlos Leon to make 13 3-pointers in a 91-88 victory over a tough Celtics team. Leon finished with 21 points in the win as well.
The Clippers posed quite a threat with Huffstetler, Gordon, Leon, 2022 big man Sam Martin (Apex), 2022 wing Dylan Wiggins (Cleveland) and 2021 Owen Hanner (Garner Magnet). They were quite the squad in the opening week with each contributing in meaningful ways.
Martin held things down on the interior with his rebounding and shot-blocking ability. Wiggins showed off his ability to fill in wherever needed. In their opening game, he put up four points but in their second game, he posted 16 points. Hanner did a little bit of everything, scoring from the perimeter and off the drive.
A look at some 30+ point performers
Defense wasn’t a necessity in Week 1 as teams got a feel for each other. Week 1 brought out an impressive number of 30-point scorers. As mentioned earlier, Silas Demary Jr. was the performer of the week with his 36 points but he wasn’t alone in the 30-point club.
2023 guard Will Otto (Broughton) made things look easy in Week 1 for the Heat. He went off for 32 points in a 103-57 victory, putting up 24 of his 32 in the first half of things. He scored from behind the arc and got to the rim with relative ease for his squad.
2022 guard Nik Graves posted 30 points for the Lakers, though it came in an 81-80 defeat in their second game of the day. Graves showed poised in a back-and-forth battle against the Cavaliers. In the end, he finished with four made 3-pointers and four made free throws showing off his skill set as a scoring guard.
In their opening game against the Lakers, 2022 forward Dante Kiesenhofer (Holly Springs) showed off what he could do with 44 points in an 87-73 victory. Kiesenhofer scored in a variety of ways, showing off his range from 3-point land as well as his ability to attack the rim in Week 1. Stay tuned for more in the coming weeks!
