Continue ReadingThe Prep Hoops Top 250 highlighted some of the best talent from various parts of the state. There was an abundance of players showing off their shooting and ball handling skills. However, the people who got the most oohs and ahhs were the guys playing above the rim. We will take a look at the high flyers from the PH Top 250.
Jordan Johnson / 6’7″ / Madison Prep / 2020
There was not a player who had more highlights during the Prep Hoops Top 250 than Johnson. He punished the rims at the Sportsplex with numerous fast break dunks. Whether it was off of one or two feet, Johnson made sure he gave his teammates a boost and the crowd a show with his dunks. Johnson is one of the more athletic forwards/posts in the state, also. He is a high energy player who is really best when he plays above the rim. Mid-major schools and lower would love a rim-running, shot blocking player like him. Johnson can definitely be a highlight reel player when he is in the right situation. At the Top 250, he was in that situation to display those skills.
Camryn Carter / 6’3″ / East Ascension / 2020
Carter was another player who had quite a few highlights during the Top 250. As far as high flyers go, when he got a steal and open court in front of him, he was attacking the rim. His breakaway dunks were nasty. Each one was harder than the next. His teammates tried to catch him on a couple of alley-oop attempts as well that just missed. He has a long, slender frame and changes ends lightening fast. Carter may be in the position to create more poster-type dunks because of his ability to defend. One thing is for certain, if he gets into the open court, the rims on the opposite end will not be safe.
DeShawn Jackson / 6’1″ / Pickering / 2021
Jackson is a player I am going to nickname “Mr. Alley-oop”. Every time I see him in a camp setting someone is throwing him one. At 6’1″ he has a long and lanky frame which gives you the impression that he is taller than his listed height. During the Top 250 expo, a couple of alleys were mistimed to Jackson. If they had connected, he would have probably brought the house down. Jackson can do more than jump and dunk though. He is an effective slasher and is working on the consistency of jumper. Make no mistake, if he catches his defender in a position where he can posterize him, Jackson is going to take that chance.
Matt Hayman / 6’4″ / Ouachita / 2020 (pictured above)
Hayman has been playing above the rim all summer long. During team scrimmages and team camps, Hayman has attacked the rim ferociously and put down some authoritative dunks. During the Top 250, it was more of the same. He did not get a chance to dunk like he normally does because of being fouled; however, he did attack the rim with the same effort. Hayman can also shoot the ball from distance and rebound with the best wings around. I actually look for him to make a big splash in his senior season like a Jalen Brooks did for Woodlawn-Shreveport two seasons ago. With his athleticism, he will have many a highlight as well. Look for Hayman to be a regular on Twitter for his above the rim exploits.
Other high flyers would include:
Malik Henry (Longview (TX) High)
Christian Caldwell (Southwood)
Hobert Grayson IV (East Ascension)
Michael Jones (Woodlawn-Shreveport)
Look for all of these preps mentioned to be highlight reels as the season goes on.
