BELLFLOWER, Ca.—Head Coach Matt Dunn has continued the tradition as the St. John Bosco Summer League attracts many of the elite teams in Southern California. Each and every year there always appears to be a few prospects who take their game to a new level and this year was no different as a pair of 2021s in 6-foot-4 Scotty Washington and 6-foot-5 Peyton Watson are the latest examples.
Jalen Vasquez (Bishop Montgomery)
2022, PG, 6-foot, 150 pounds
Joel’s Take: Jalen, whose older brother is heading to Montana in the fall, appears to be taking that same path due to his high basketball IQ and skills. The up-and-coming point guard prospect has a great feel for the game and is one of the better up-and-coming guards in So-Cal. He needs to get stronger handling physical defenders, but he is slippery in the paint area and can finish amongst the trees.
Jimmy Oladokun (Damien)
2023, WF, 6-foot-5, 180 pounds
Joel’s Take: Oladokun has that prototypical rangy frame with long arms and he is a budding athlete as well. He shows solid ball skills and he can score (solid 3-point touch) or slash his way to the rim. Overall, Damien has some solid looking prospects coming up.
Jeremiah Nyarko (St. John Bosco)
2022, PF/WF, 6-foot-6, 175 pounds
Nyarko has a great upside due to his length, bounce, and budding skillJoel’s Take: This bouncy 4-man has a grip of upside. Long arms, soft hands, and precise timing at both ends of the floor describes this young thoroughbred. He plays with an even keel and never gets too up or down from a mental state. With continued work on his face-up skills and touch, his future is bright.
Xavier Edmonds (Bishop Montgomery)
2023, C, 6-foot-7, 215 pounds
Joel’s Take: Edmonds is a big-bodied 5-man with good length, soft hands, and provides a physical presence. He can seal on the block and finish through contact. He doesn’t have great bounce yet, but as his frame matures he should be menace to deal with in the coming years.
Jazz Gardner (Damien)
2023, C, 6-foot-8, 190 pounds
Joel’s Take: You know you’re getting old as a scout when you start tapping into the next generation of son’s who you evaluated their dad back in the day—and that is exactly the case with Gardner. His dad (Jelani) was a McDondald’s All American (Bishop Amat and then later St. John Bosco) as a long range shooter/playmaker at 6-foot-5. His son (Jazz) projects well as a “big” who should develop a potent inside-out scoring punch.
