IRVINE, Ca.— Devin Ugland, one of the up-and-coming scouts on the West Coast, put together an outstanding camp for prospects of various levels—and even a female baller by the name of Te-Hina Paopao. The camp consisted of a variety of skill development stations orchestrated by some of the finest trainors/coaches in So-Cal. The best prospect was the much-improved junior-to-be Peyton Watson while an incoming 9th grader by the name of Kylan Boswell more than held his own.
Christian Watson (Long Beach Poly)
2022, PG, 5-foot-11, 145 pounds
Joel’s Take: Watson is the younger brother of Peyton and he has a blossoming game of his own. He hasn’t hit his growth spurt, but like his brother it will come. He has long arms, big feet, and is just tapping into his potential. He has a quick burst off the dribble, a clever handle, and his vision was impressive while operating the offense.
Will Mathews (San Diego/Balboa)
2020, SG, 6-foot-4, 165 pounds
Joel’s Take: Mathews was one of the better scorers in camp. He is a three-level scorer who attacks well off the dribble, navigates his way through the defense in transition, and can knock in the 3-point shot.
Corey White (Lomita/Narbonne)
2021, WF/PF, 6-foot-5, 190 pounds
Joel’s Take: “Late bloomer” is a common term used in scouting and it definitely describes White. The burly 4/3 has a terrific frame with long arms , soft hands, and is just beginning to scratch the surface of his potential. He is a fluid athlete as well and can score through contact in the paint. As he continues to work on his ball skills and triple threat game, the physical tools are there.
Grant Tull (Gridley)
2021, WF, 6-foot-5, 185 pounds
Tull is a versatile player on both ends of the floor.Joel’s Take: The lanky lefty has one of the smoothest shooting touches around. He doesn’t have quick feet or much lift, but he does have skill and savvy. He can spot up and nail the deep jump shot or convert buckets underneath due to his knack of always being around the ball. His ball skills have improved since the Pangos All Frosh/Soph camp and it will be interestiing to see the growth of his game going forward.
Mason Hudnall (Hayward/Moreau Catholic)
2022, SG, 6-foot-4, 165 pounds
Joel’s Take: Hudnall is a willowy shooting guard with very long arms and overall good length for the position. He can stroke jump shots—more like a set shot shot at this stage—and he too is a natural scorer. He utilizes the up-fake to get defenders off balance and he showed a soft floater as well. Once strength and maturity kicks in, his game will elevate as well.
