It’s never too early to look ahead to the following high school season, so I figured I’d get in on the breakdowns. This season in Baltimore should be an interesting one. There are a couple of teams that are clearly above the rest of the pack, but even the teams on the next tier down will be worth a watch. Let’s get started.
Justin Lewis & Rahim Ali | Poly ’20
Lewis and Ali are chasing history this season with Ali going for his fourth Class 3A state title and Lewis for his third. The two complement each other so well with Ali being a floor general and Lewis being a versatile forward. When these two are operating in ball screens, the options are endless. Lewis, a Marquette commit, will look to be even more dynamic as a scorer out on the perimeter. Ali’s ability to slither into the lane and force the defense to collapse will supply Lewis with plenty of those opportunities.
Ace Baldwin & Jordan Toles | St. Frances ’20
You won’t be able to find a duo with more chemistry on the floor here in Baltimore than these two, especially in transition. Baldwin’s elite vision and play making pairs will with Toles’ freakish athleticism to supply crowds with plenty of poster alley-oops. Lobs don’t only come in transition, as Baldwin and Toles can non-verbally communicate in the half court as they read how the defense is playing and exploit weaknesses routinely.
Martaz Robinson & Andrew Mills | New Town ’20
Robinson and Mills spearheaded a dominant season in Baltimore County play that led them to the Baltimore County championship. Robinson, a 6-foot-2 floor general, was effective throughout the season picking and choosing his spots to leave his impact on games. Mills, a 6-foot-5 wing, had a breakout junior campaign with a handful of big time scoring performances. New Town lost some talent due to graduation and transfers, so it’ll be intriguing to watch these two take on even more of a production load and protect their county title.
Ryan Conway & Cam Byers | Dulaney ’21 & ’20
Dulaney will look very different in comparison to last year. With ’21 Ike Cornish and ’20 Che Evans both transferring, Conway and Byers will be responsible for their team’s fate. Conway has ability to go for 30 any night he steps on the floor, so scoring won’t be much of an issue. For Byers, he steps in and takes on a much bigger role than he played last season. With Cornish and Evans gone, Byers will see the ball in his hands much more often. At 6-foot-5 and built like a linebacker, not many players in the county can match up with him.
John Godinez & Jordan Strickland | Parkville ’20
Godinez and Strickland are two under the radar prospects playing in Baltimore County, but these two will be responsible for much of the team’s success. With Godinez transferring in last fall and the continued development of Strickland, Parkville established themselves as a formidable threat in county play. Godinez, a 5-foot-9 point guard, is lightning quick with the ball and has advanced vision as a play maker. Strickland, a 6-foot-4 wing/forward, is a walking double-double who is implementing more of a perimeter game to translate to the next level. When all else fails, Strickland can be a force on the offensive glass and finish above the rim.
