As we prepare for another season, be on the lookout for the upcoming Top 250 Expos in your region. In the mean time, the staff will be hitting you with several preseason nuggets. This series aims to highlight 30 of the best young cores in the DMV. A “young core” consists of players with at least two full years of high school basketball remaining. This includes prospects from the class of 2021 and younger. Here is a brief rundown of #5-1.
#5 GOOD COUNSEL (MD)
The Falcons boast one of the deepest 2021 classes around. Bez Mbeng and Day’sJuan Waters are currently the most polished of the bunch. Jalen Curtis and Antoine Jacks have plenty of experience from which to build upon. RJ Floyd showed some promising signs this summer and Chidera Nwosu brings energy to the group. Kyle Pulliam will be a sophomore to watch down the road, and Corey Chesley is an incoming freshman worth watching sooner.
#4 GONZAGA (DC)
Judah Mintz, Devin Dinkins, Quinn Clark, Jared Turner, and Malik Stute represent one of the stronger 2022 classes you will find locally. 2021 Malcolm Dread is a lockdown defender who brings toughness, and Thomas Batties is a highly touted incoming freshman with a bright future.
#3 SIDWELL FRIENDS (DC)
Ryan Cornish and Afamdi Achufusi will team up to form a tough and versatile 2021 backcourt tandem. George Perkins and Chris Gamble both gained solid experience last season as freshmen and look ready to take the next step. Alex Freishtat, Spencer Tyson, and Greg Jones are three 2021 prospects who continue to improve. Point guard Cam Gillus and big man Chris Russell are two incoming freshmen who Coach Singletary should be excited about.
#2 DEMATHA (MD)
The Stags have at least one stud in the 2021-2023 classes respectively. The addition of Jordan Hawkins gives them a major boost in 2021 to go along with budding forward Bobby Hill Jr. Tyrell Ward and Jerrell Roberson are a couple of nice 2022 prospects with good potential. Kalen Cobb is an incoming freshman worth tracking. 2022’s Tyree Davis, Logan Blair, and Jeff Womack all played well on the grassroots circuit and should continue to get better.
#1 PAUL VI (VA)
Paul VI boasts an incredible young core that is bolstered by tremendous depth and top-tier talent. Trevor Keels is one of the best 2021 prospects in the country. Dug McDaniel has as much big game experience as any 2022 floor general you will find. Avery Ford is an elite defender in the 2021 class. Luke Triggs, Reiss Whitaker, Jack Jensen and Tyler Coleman bring size and additional depth to a talented 2021 class. Christian May is an up-and-comer in 2022. Incoming freshman DeShawn Harris-Smith and Marvin Brimage Jr. appear to be up next in the program.
