As we prepare for another season, be on the lookout for the upcoming Top 250 Expos in your region. In the mean time, the staff will be hitting you with several preseason nuggets. The purpose of this article is to identify five of the best defenders you will find locally at each position.
PG: JALEN MILLER | BISHOP WALSH ’21
At 6-foot-2, 185 pounds with a 6-foot-5 wingspan, Miller is a sturdily built guard with a strong base. His blend of size, strength and quickness enables him to defend multiple positions effectively. He works best defensively when pressuring the ball and opposing ball-handlers find it difficult to create space because of his physicality.
SG: TREMAINE CHESLEY | ST. CHARLES ’20
Chesley is a tenacious on-ball defender with good size at 6-foot-3. He moves his feet very well laterally. This helps him consistently turn his man in the backcourt and stay in front. Chesley also has quick hands and reacts swiftly when pursuing a loose ball.
SF: EARL TIMBERLAKE | DEMATHA ’20
Timberlake stands 6-foot-5, but his physical profile is bolstered by a robust frame featuring a 7-foot-wingspan. This helps him block shots frequently and rebound out of his area as well as defend effectively on the perimeter while disrupting the passing lanes.
PF: DAVID SOLOMON | LAKE BRADDOCK ’22
Aside from his tireless motor, Solomon has big time athleticism and impressive mobility which enables him to defend any position on the court. His timing, instincts and recovery speed are all above average and this only adds to his defensive capabilities.
C: AVERY FORD | PAUL VI ’21
Ford might be considered a bit undersized at 6’6, but he plays much bigger due to his length and vigilance. His fantastic coordination helps him block and alter shots quite effectively around the basket as well as secure defensive rebounds in traffic.
