As we prepare for another season, be on the lookout for the upcoming Top 250 Expos in your region. In the mean time, the staff will be hitting you with several preseason nuggets. Below we highlight eight of the toughest backcourts you will find in the city. The list is organized in alphabetical order by team.
ARCHBISHOP CARROLL
Key Players: ’20 Cory Barnes, ’20 Casheus Covington, ’21 Jaylen Hall, ’22 Rob Lawson
The Skinny: Each of the guards in the Lions backcourt can fill different Roles. Barnes is the defensive stopper, Covington is a skilled scorer, Hall is a shot-maker, and Lawson is a quick ball-handler.
CESAR CHAVEZ
Key Players: ’21 Miasiah Brown, ’22 Michael Henderson, ’21 Lamont Tate
The Skinny: The Eagles have a skilled, scrappy backcourt with good potential. All three guards can defend, score and facilitate.
GONZAGA
Key Players: ’22 Devin Dinkins, ’20 Chuck Harris, ’22 Judah Mintz, ’22 Jared Turner
The Skinny: Harris is the vet who has won a ton of games. His leadership intangibles should rub off on Gonzaga’s exciting young core.
KIPP
Key Players: ’21 Rasheed Dupree, ’21 Saveon Jackson
The Skinny: Dupree sets the tone with his relentless pressure defensively on the ball. The Panthers might lack size, but Jackson helps make up for it with his ability to rebound and make winning plays on both ends of the floor.
MARET
Key Players: ’23 James Lerner, ’22 Ridge Parks, ’20 Teo Rice, ’20 Alex Williams,
The Skinny: Rice and Parks will likely assume a majority of the ball-handling duties. Lerner and Williams will help stretch the floor with their ability to make shots consistently.
SIDWELL FRIENDS
Key Players: ’21 Afamdi Achufusi, ’21 Ryan Cornish, ’22 Chris Gamble, ’23 Cam Gillus
The Skinny: Achufusi is a big guard who does virtually everything on the floor. Cornish will bring size, skill and shooting to the Quakers backcourt. Gamble will play with toughness and defend. Gillus is a promising young guard who plays with good pace. He will likely help handle the ball and provide depth.
ST. JOHN’S
Key Players: ’22 Shane Lancaster, ’20 Ishmael Leggett, ’20 John “Manzie” Wilson
The Skinny: Wilson and Leggett should combine to form one of the strongest backcourts in the city. Lancaster appears set to play a bigger role and carry the torch moving forward.
THURGOOD MARSHALL
Key Players: ’21 Mark Aiken, ’21 Mike Aiken
The Skinny: The Aiken twins are both highly skilled and compliment each other nicely in the backcourt. They can both play on and off the ball which makes them tough to defend.
