This past weekend, John Burroughs High School in Burbank, CA played host to the California Preps Showcase. The event featured some of the top players in the area from the Class of 2022 and 2023. Here’s a look at some of the top players from the Class of 2022 that I saw.
Mason Dorsey – Crespi
Dorsey has the potential to be a very, very good basketball player. He already is incredibly skilled, and he has so much room to grow. He’s a good shooter from the perimeter, but where he really stands out is his playmaking ability. He can act as the primary ball-handler. He’s always looking for his teammates and he has great court vision. He runs the break very well, great in transition. His development will be fun to watch.
Joshua Kim – Flintridge Prep
Kim is a very quick guard. He’s good at getting to the rim, and he finishes well in the paint. When he gets to the rim, he uses his body well to create contact and get himself to the free-throw line where he shoots it well. He’s quick when making a move off the dribble, he has a good first step. He can shoot the ball well from three-point range too.
Donovan Santoro – Crespi
Santoro is an explosive athlete. He’s looking to finish with authority at the rim. He gets out in transition well, he’s always looking to jump out ahead on the break. He’s a very athletic finisher at the rim. He’s very long as well and he uses that length to his advantage to finish at the rim over defenders. He’s got a nice looking perimeter shot as well.
Aidan Dixon – Birmingham
Dixon is a tough forward. He doesn’t mind mixing it up in the paint as well as playing on the perimeter. He’s a decent rebounder and he puts himself in positon to crash the glass well. When he attacks the rim, he’s good at drawing contact from defenders and getting himself to the free-throw line. He runs the floor well on the break and he can take the ball coast to coast and finish. Decent three-point shooter.
Caden Leff – Newbury Park
Leff has the ability to become a very good big man. He gets good post position for a player his age. It’s rare to see such young players able to play well in the paint like that. He has some solid spin moves when he catches the ball in the post. Finishes very well at the rim. When it comes to rebounds, he very solid, especially on the offensive end fighting for second chance opportunities.
Karson Peffer – Crespi
Crespi has a quite a bit of sophomore talent, and Peffer is yet another one. He’s a good hustle player at the moment. He crashes the glass well and plays hard around the rim. He positions himself well in the paint to be ready for rebounds. Good offensive rebounder to gain extra possessions for his team. He cuts well and is ready to catch passes from his teammates.
