And although there are many ways to get noticed by scouts, putting the ball in the basket is by far the most effective. So here are the Avocado – West’s top scorers heading into next season:
- Elijah Randall: Being a 6’4 guard in high school basketball has its advantages. For Elijah, it allows him to shoot over even the best guard closeouts with little effect on his shot as well as finish tough shots around the rim. In his Junior season with San Marcos, Randall averaged 15.1 points per game on 40% shooting from the field. Also hitting 1.8 threes per game, Elijah could very well be in line for major scouting attraction this season (assuming normal progression).
- Jailen Nelson: A 5’10 guard entering his senior season at Carlsbad, Jailen Nelson is VERY good at getting to his spots on the floor. His elite handles and deadly first step allow him to breeze by defenders. Coming off a 12 PPG season on 35% shooting on three-pointers, given some more consistent finishing in the paint, Nelson could become one of the most efficient scorers in the league.
- Brandon Angel: One of the most taught after small forwards in Southern California, with the Pope brothers now out of Torrey Pines, Brandon Angel is set to garner MAJOR college attention this winter. Because in terms of scoring, the only thing Angel is missing is volume. Last season, he shot 53% from the field, 40% on threes, and 86% on free throws. That is absurdly efficient. And with the Pope brothers no longer able to take shots, his PPG could jump from 10.4 to the high teens or early twenties.
- Chris Howell: A 6’5, 185 lbs. wing entering his junior season at San Marcos, Chris Howell averaged 12.3 PPG with San Marcos last season. Although he is extremely lacking a jump shot (8 3PM), Howell excels near the rim (49 FG%). And again, Howell will only be a junior this season. There is still plenty of time to develop a jump shot as well as improve on scoring volume.
- Devon Arlington: Imagine a 6’2 freshman point guard that was fourth in the league in scoring on a Varsity team that won 68% of their games. That’s Devon Arlington. He’s 6’2, has a quick first step, plays at his own pace, and has already garnered scholarship offers from UC Riverside and Cal State Bakersfield. Last season, he averaged 12.9 PPG on 42 FG% and 74 FT%. The only aspect of his game that we have yet to see in full swing is his three-point jumper. Although he shot upwards of 30% last season, he made less than one per game.
