Continue ReadingNearly 5 months have passed since our last rankings update for the 2022 class. They’ve finished their AAU seasons and getting ready to get back to work with their high school teams in the coming months. With this rankings update, we expand out to 70 total players as more and more of these young men have started to make an impact this summer with their high school and AAU teams. Here’s a look at the top shooting guards and combo guards in 2022:
Turrell Cleaves, Jr., Butler – One of the better athletes in the class, Cleaves is long and bouncy and still growing. Turrell is one of the younger players in the class as well so there is no telling how high his ceiling could be. He has matured some over the summer but still has room for improvement in his on court demeanor. One thing for sure about the 6’4 wing is that he possesses a killer’s mentality and is working to become the best player he can be. If he can become a 40%+ three point shooter in addition to his athleticism and skill level, he can be a big time prospect.
Jerone Morton, George Rogers Clark – Morton is a highly skilled combo guard who gets bigger and better each time I see him. He’s a smooth lefty who reminds me of a more skilled Trevon Faulkner. Where Trevon was a better athlete than Jerone shows now, Morton makes up for with a tremendous skill level and high IQ. He’s likely to get handed the keys to the GRC offense this season as a primary ball handler but Morton is more of a combo guard or even a shooting guard with a solid handle. He is a contender for top prospect in the class.
Brandon Rayzer-Moore, Jeffersontown – Another contender for top prospect in the class, Rayzer-Moore had a very impressive freshman season on varsity at J-Town but had an underwhelming AAU season with Manimal Elite before switching to Stamina for July.If Brandon can become the consistent scorer he has shown the potential to be, his ability as a shooter and driver are among the best in the state in 2022. If he keeps developing, he’s another player who could be the best in 2022.
Andru Markham, Fern Creek – Part of a loaded Sophomore group at Fern Creek, Markham missed July after knee surgery but he has shown the ability to be a reliable wing scorer and defender whose best basketball is ahead of him as he keeps developing his skills. Assuming the knee surgery wasn’t serious and he is back by October 15th, Andru is going to be an impact player in the 6th region this year and could help get the Tigers to Rupp Arena in March.
Luke Imfeld, Boyle County – Imfeld is a dark horse to be the highest scoring Sophomore in the state as Boyle is going to be young and need him to take and make a lot of shots this year. Luke can shoot it from deep and is developing a midrange game as his scoring package evolves. He reminds me of former Boyle County All-State Selection Hagen Tyler with his size and scoring ability. If Luke shows he can guard multiple positions, college coaches will come calling in the not too distant future.
Other Names to Know:
Jack Gohmann, Lexington Catholic – Gohmann had a huge summer scoring the ball and should be a breakout player in the 11th.
Miles Franklin, Trinity – Franklin is recovering from injury but has the potential to have a huge Sophomore season for Trinity.
Kanye Henderson, Henry Clay – Lots of potential, Kanye will be a role player this year for Clay but will be a star a year from now.
Hagan Harrison, Montgomery County – When he’s at his best, he’s as good as any guard in the class. Should be a solid contributor in the 10th this year.
Kennedy “Keno” Hayden, Ballard – Hayden as as much potential as anyone in the class but needs to play with a consistent motor to reach the next tier of player.
