Continue ReadingNearly 5 months have passed since our last rankings update for the 2022 class. They’ve finished their AAU seasons and getting ready to get back to work with their high school teams in the coming months. With this rankings update, we expand out to 70 total players as more and more of these young men have started to make an impact this summer with their high school and AAU teams. Here’s a look at the top power forwards and post players in 2022:
James Jewell, Eastern – Our top ranked player in the class, James has a super high ceiling thanks to his combination of length, athleticism, skill and motor. Jewell is an excellent shot blocker and two handed rebounder on the defensive end while possessing a solid offensive skill set. James can put the ball on the floor and attack the rim and continues improving as a shooter from the perimeter. James has a high major ceiling and appears to be on his way to reaching it.
Tim Hall, Dunbar – The 6’6 Hall is a relentless player with an incredible motor. Tim plays every game like it means something to him and that’s probably his best attribute. The son of a D1 track coach, Hall is a good athlete and his ceiling is super high if he just tacks on a couple of inches of height and adds bulk over the next couple of years. Dunbar has a nice, young core of athletes and Tim looks to be the best of the bunch and a potential difference maker in the 11th region.
Justin Becker, Robertson County – Justin is a stretch 4 type of player who can make open perimeter shots or finish around the rim. Becker can be limited due to a lack of lateral athleticism and ability to guard. In a half court game, he thrives but the 6’6 post struggled at times this summer with Manimal Elite as the pace wore him down. He is still a player to watch in the 10th region and should be on the radar of colleges.
Jackson Twombly, Frankfort – Twombly is a player who won’t blow you away in the layup line but he gets things done when the whistle blows and the game starts. Twombly has shown he can really shoot the ball from downtown in addition to have a really nice set of post moves that are effective on the low block. It remains to be seen how good of a college prospect he will be but Jackson will be a difference maker in the 11th region and can be an even better player if he improves his conditioning.
Ben Michel, South Oldham – One of the more “off the radar” players in the 2022 rankings, Michel should have an increased role for the Dragons as a Sophomore. He’s 6’6 now and will need to transition to the wing if he’s done growing. With South Oldham’s unique 5 out offense, Ben may shoot more threes this season than the rest of the list combined. Coming off a strong season with Indiana Elite 15u, Ben is used to winning a lot and will try to get South Oldham back to Rupp Arena in March.
Other Names to Know:
Robby Todd, Dunbar – One of our highest ranked additions to the rankings, Robby and Tim Hall make a formidable duo at Dunbar.
JiArius Webb, Owensboro Catholic – Long and athletic, Webb can be a high major prospect with a growth spurt.
Aden Nyekan, Barren County – An electric athlete, Aden is on the list of kids who could be a Top 10 prospect a year from now.
Gavin Wimsatt, Owensboro – A three sport star, Wimsatt likely plays football in college but he’s tough on the hardwood too.
Caden Veltkamp, South Warren – Likely to be a Quarterback in college, Veltkamp is a nice basketball prospect at 6’5 and still growing.
