Continue ReadingNearly 5 months have passed since our last rankings update for the 2022 class. They’ve finished their AAU seasons and getting ready to get back to work with their high school teams in the coming months. With this rankings update, we expand out to 70 total players as more and more of these young men have started to make an impact this summer with their high school and AAU teams. Here’s a look at the top point guards in 2022:
Jordan Akal Jordan Akal 6'1" | PG Harlan | 2022 State KY , Harlan – Akal is a scoring point guard who is capable of lighting up a scoreboard. This summer, Akal showed out at the KBC with back to back games where he totaled 80 points across the two contests then followed that with a big July of AAU playing on the UA Rise Circuit with MATTS Mustangs. Colleges have started to take notice of Akal’s abilities as well. Heading into his sophomore season, Jordan could be the highest scorer in the 13th region.
Turner Buttry Turner Buttry 5'11" | PG Bowling Green | 2022 State KY , Bowling Green – Turner is a high IQ floor general who knows how to run a team. He’s always communicating with teammates on offense and defense. When left open, Turner is a knockdown shooter and rarely misses a free throw. His midrange game is still developing and adding a consistent floater to his arsenal would elevate his offense big time. Bowling Green is loaded with talent so Turner can get a little overlooked but he makes their team better on both ends of the floor.
Jaxon Smith Jaxon Smith 6'2" | PG Lincoln County | 2022 State KY , Lincoln County – Jaxon is entering his third season as the starting point guard for the Patriots and should be a top 5 player in the 12th region this season. His scoring ability continues to improve as he has worked to become a better shooter. Smith can put the ball on the floor and attack the rim or kick to open shooters. His ceiling as a prospect is going to improve as he proves he can guard opposing point guards. Lincoln typically plays 2-3 zone so Jaxon doesn’t get to show his defensive abilities as much as other players who play mostly man to man.
Christian Spalding Christian Spalding 6'4" | PG Evangel Christian | 2022 State KY , Eastern – Spalding is a player who is moving up the rankings as a rapid pace and could be a top 5-10 prospect in the next update. Christian has good positional size and is an excellent distributor of the basketball. Part of a loaded 2022 group at Eastern, Spalding should be expected to start for the Eagles this year and be a large part of the great, young core for Eastern. He and James Jewell James Jewell 6'6" | PF Marion County | 2022 State KY are going to be major impact players this season and should be state title contenders in 2021 and 2022.
Aden Slone Aden Slone 5'9" | PG George Rogers Clark | 2022 State KY , Danville – Aden may be the best ball handler in the position group as he has a tight handle and high skill level. Slone can score the ball at the rim or from the perimeter but is generally a distributor before being a scorer. His ceiling as a prospect is going to be determined by if he will grow anymore, but Aden should make an impact for Danville this season after sitting out most of last year after a transfer from Boyle County to play for the Admirals.
Other Names to Know:
Austin “Rico” Cole-Carr, North Oldham – Rico is more of a scoring point guard. It will be interesting to see how he fits in a suddenly loaded Mustang backcourt.
Tre Irvin, Trinity – Irvin is skilled for sure and could move back up the rankings with a solid Sophomore season for the Rocks.
Darian Lewis, Fern Creek – Darian has developed a lot in the last 6 months or so and should be a starter for a good Fern Creek team.
Brady Dingess Brady Dingess 5'11" | PG Martin County | 2022 State KY , Martin County – After spending a year at Paintsville, DIngess returns to Martin County to try and get the Cardinals to the regional tournament.
Brian Griffith Brian Griffith 5'9" | PG Owensboro Catholic | 2023 State KY , Owensboro Catholic – Griffith is small but shifty and should have the Aces in the mix to win the 3rd Region this season.
