Continue ReadingWe have discussed plenty of different positions as these players head into their senior years. We have discussed guard and wings but now it is time to focus on the big men that do all of the dirty work. Big men is hard to determine with the game evolving and each player being able to step out and be versatile but with some of the biggest players in the state there is an ability to affect the game.
The 2020 class is a class with solid production in and out, here we focus on some of the big men that fell under the cracks in a deep sleeper dive.
(Number is their ranking)
Deep Sleepers:
- Dominic Puchino – Roosevelt
Puchino is a deep, deep sleeper as not a ton of people have ever gotten to see him play. He is an athletic big man that can also play out on the wing and defend multiple positions. Last year he put up a team-high 12.4 points and also led the team in rebounds by a large margin with 7.3 rebounds a game. While he is not a knock down shooter it doesn’t mean that he cannot space the floor as he was able to knock shots quite often. He was the focal point on the offense and still was able to contribute and was strong down the home stretch to finish off the season so he will have to come back ready to open things up and build on a decent year.
- Chandler Williams – Regis Groff
Regis Groff is one of the teams that was going through a rebuild being a new school and all so with that comes growing pains. One of the bright spots for them was their man in the middle, Williams. Williams was one of the players who was able to get going in his junior season. He can also put the ball on the floor and get to his spots on offense which led to easy baskets. He was force fed the ball at times and did not have a real flow of the offense but made the best of the opportunities as he was the only player to score in double-digits (10.2 points) and also put up 8.8 rebounds a game as well. On a team with more success he would have had a better season and I do feel as if he can do that this season if the rest of the team catches up.
- Jake Hassett – Rock Canyon
Hassett is a player that grew into his own as the season progressed. He got bigger, he started picking up new parts to add to his game and found his groove to finish off the year. He put up six points and 3.5 rebounds a game. Hassett is a forward that is interchangeable playing 3-5. He shoots, moves fluidly and bangs on the boards to keep plays alive. He is great in the pick and roll and has soft touch around the rim as this is a year he can show a few more areas that he grew over the summer to add to his game. Rock Canyon lost a few key players but should be a team that still hangs around and competes to the highest level and with the twin tower lineup that they will have it seems like this is a blow-up year for Hassett to separate himself.
- Roger Rosengarten – Valor Christian
I am not sure if Rosengarten is going to play basketball this season as the 4-star football player just committed to the University of Washington to be on the gridiron but what a player he is on the hardwood. I believe the only reason that he is not ranked higher is because of his abilities on the field and it is understood that that is the sport that is going to take him places. He is a brute in basketball that plays with strength and passion. He is difficult to guard as his ability to score in the paint in bunches as well as rebound makes it difficult for any big man to hang with him. Last season he put up 15.6 points and close to eight rebounds a game. He set great screens, he was impossible to move on the block and ran the floor well with that size. Valor will hope to have him back and if not, it was exciting to see him play. Good luck in the Pac-12.
Unranked: Tommy Rau – Rock Canyon
Rau is not a player that we got to see a ton of last season but he will most definitely be a player that will be remembered and talked about this upcoming season based on what I seen this summer. He is one of the biggest players in the state at 6’11 but not only is he big, but has great skill to go along with it. He sees the floor well, feels the double-team and finds the open man, can back down defenders and finish over them and he catches and goes straight up with it. Rau is a big man that uses his size well and he will definitely be a player that Rock Canyon goes to a ton this season. This is a name to get on your radars as by winter he will surely be ranked and most likely pretty high
