The best scorers have the ability to punish teams from multiple levels with different variations of moves. Several players will be left off this list, but that is no disrespect to their ability to get buckets. Here are my top 5 scorers in the 2020 class.
Tommy Murr (Lindsey Lane)- Murr has to be on anyone’s list. I don’t care if he is torching 1A competition… The legendary Frankie Sullivan dominated people at 2A. Murr is a combo guard who has lead the nation in scoring. This kid can score at all 3 levels. He is crafty with the ball in his hands, but I think Murr is at his best moving without the ball and setting up his jumper.
Kam Woods (Pinson Valley)- Kam Woods without a doubt is on this list. This kid has the ultimate green light. He’s at his best in the open court. Woods can heat up in a hurry from deep, but he will also make defenders fall asleep with his crafty handle. He is known for being a volume scorer, but when this kid is on… look out.
Giancarlo Valdez (Decatur Heritage)- Valdez may be a surprise to some people, but if you watched him this spring/summer you know what he can do. The 6’3 guard can score at all 3 levels and has a very smooth jumper. What makes this kid special, is that dog inside him. From the jump, Valdez is coming for your head.
Colby Jones (Mountain Brook)- Jones is a special talent. He has really improved and turned a lot of heads this spring/summer. The Xavier commit can score at all 3 levels. The 6’5 guard is very comfortable with the ball in his hands, and he can score on the move. Jones will have a larger role this season as the No. 1 option for Mountain Brook, and he should flourish in it.
Sam Youngblood (McAdory)- Don’t sleep on this kid. Youngblood gets buckets. He is crafty with the ball and gets to his jumper with ease. I have been very impressed with his development. Youngblood has very good shooting mechanics and can score at all 3 levels. He is another prospect that moves very well without the ball.
Honorable Mentions: Jadan Coleman, Jalen Myers, Mark Sears, Sedrick Pettway, Trey Bonham, and Hayden Lamey.
