Here is Part 2 of the list of top standouts I had a chance to see on the day.
ICYMI: Part 1
Marvel Allen (Wellington)
Officially making the move to Wellington from Benjamin, 2023 6’4″ guard Marvel Allen is coming up quickly. A kid packed with star potential, he was elusive as an attacker and his vision and willingness to push the ball in tempo often is impressive. His jumper is reliable but can get better. Allen is a scorer and a high IQ passer and he is just starting to grow. Wellington has one of the best freshmen to build around in the state.
Jonathan Aybar (Central Pointe Christian)
Perhaps one of the most noticeable bigs in attendance was 2020 6’8″ Central Pointe Christian forward Jonathan Aybar. A steady knockdown shooter, Aybar was getting inside with ease and dunking often. His aggressive defense is a difference-maker as well. Aybar currently has offers from FAU, FIU and FGCU.
Brice Sensabaugh (Lake Highland Prep)
As the day went on, the better 2022 6’4″ Lake Highland Prep guard Brice Sensabaugh got. During one sequence in his third game of the day, he hit three straight 3’s in transition and was really feeling it. His tough defensive prowess and all-around scoring touch are shining through right now. Once Sensabaugh adds more muscle, he’ll be an even bigger problem.
James Lee Repass (Providence)
An inside game is what 2021 6’10” Providence forward James Lee Repass is all about. He’s an absolute bully in the paint as a scorer and a rebounder. Repass is a big body who is not afraid to put his body on the line and play hard on both ends. He has offers from Stetson and UNF right now and I expect him to have a breakout junior campaign up in Jacksonville.
Ausar & Amen Thompson (Pine Crest)
2022 Pine Crest twins Ausar Thompson and Amen Thompson both stand at 6’4″ and are packed with pure athleticness. The twins could easily be successful wide receivers or cornerbacks for the football (but don’t currently play in high school). Good mid-range shooters and pushers on the break, the Thompson twins are both in sync and can trick defenses with a variety of passes and tempo plays.
AJ Neal (West Oaks)
With 24 total offers, including Georgetown, USF, FSU, Rutgers and Southern Miss, 2021 6’1″ West Oaks guard AJ Neal is a hot name in Florida. Sitting out the third set of games, he was steady as can be as a core passer and lay-in getter prior to that. Neal has grown from just being a 3-point shooter and he had some takes to the rim that really stood out.
John Latimer III (Apopka)
Undersized but gritty as can be, 2021 6’0″ Apopka guard John Latimer III has really grown physically and on the court. He has a strong upper body and he’s taking more chances going to the basket. Latimer III made the majority of his buckets as a long-range shooter, but he’s now confident at going against bigger defenders and drawing contact. He was really good all day.
Micah Octave (Grandview Prep)
2021 6’3″ Grandview Prep guard Micah Octave is a grinder. He was cleaning up misses, hauling in rebounds and making his presence felt on most possessions. Octave is going to be a tough cover down south as a junior with his high energy play on both ends of the floor.
Mikael “MK” Ashmore (North Broward Prep)
A long and rangy forward, 2021 6’6″ North Broward Prep forward Mikael “MK” Ashmore grew four inches over the last year and his long arms are noticeable. His inside game is seasoned and he’s certainly been a quick study in terms of his height addition. Look for Ashmore to bring his mix of speed and cutting/attacking into his junior year.
