Gharram announced his commitment on a local television station Tuesday night. He chose the Ivy League champs over Seattle, CSU Northridge, Portland, Denver, UC Davis and Mississippi Valley State among others.
“The reasons I chose Yale were Coach (James) Jones obviously from a basketball standpoint, and from and academic standpoint, going to Yale I have the ability to change my whole family’s life,” Gharram said. “Going from living in a 1-bedroom apartment with seven kids, this is what I needed to do to better my family’s life.”
“I get to play for a coach who believes in me the most, and what he’s done in terms of producing not only NBA players, but really good guards who have gone on to make money overseas, and have chances to win conference championships, that all appealed to me,” Gharram said. “When you know, you know, and I felt like I knew.”
Gharram said throughout the recruitment, Jones said he would have the opportunity to start right away.
“Coach Jones believes in me, he believes in my story,” Gharram said. “He believes I can come in and play the point guard spot right away and lead this team.”
Yale is getting one of the best “true” point guards on the West Coast in Gharram, who started his high school career at Point Loma before transferring to Foothills Christian his sophomore year.
Last year, Gharram averaged a team-high 19.2 points, 6.7 rebounds and 6 assists per game for the CIF Open Division runners up.
During the spring playing with the Compton Magic, Gharram displayed his impressive court vision and slick passing, setting the table for his more heralded teammates.
Now, with his decision made, Gharram said he can focus on the upcoming season, where his goals are to lead the Knights to an Open Division championship.
“I can focus on getting better, and leading my team to as many victories as possible,” Gharram said.
