I focused primarily on 17U and a little of the 16’s. Everyone was just trying to get better heading into the only summer live period of AAU next week.
Here were some of the junior standouts from AZ and NM
Adrame Diongu PF 6’9 180 Chaparral (TABB Academy)
-Long Senegal born post player has a lot of upside. Has multiple moves in the post to create his own shot. Drop step, spin moves, up and under and can rip through and go to work. Gets off the ground effortlessly. Blocks shots as he rises up quickly and tracks the ball plus keeps it in bounds. Moves like a wing in space and covers a lot of ground. He is currently skinny but he has one of the highest upsides in the state from the soph class.
Isaiah Carr PF 6’8 Las Cruces HS (NM) (NM D1 Ambassadors 16U and 15U)
-Skilled from the high post and can shoot it from 17-feet and in. A little thin right now but held his own on 16U. Challenges shots at the rim and rebounds well in is area. He may not be done growing with a very young face.
Nathan Calmese PG 6’1 150 Mesquite (Powerhouse Hoops 16 Black)
-Talented lead guard can make others better. Has a tough in and out dribble and can create his own shot. He can shoot it from deep plus drive the lane. He is a really good passer and sees it. Can throw a dart in traffic to a teammate. Has a tight handle to get passed his defender and a quick burst with bounce to get into the lane. (Pictured)
Sean Johnson SF 6’5 Sandia HS (NM) (NM D1 Ambassadors 16U and 15U)
-Tough and bouncy. Has skill out to 3pt line and can score it inside. He is strong and plays with a good motor. Very aggressive and plays with a good edge. Can score it inside.
Tyrek Dean F 6’3 206 Chaparral (TABB Academy)
-First time seeing Dean. He is a very strong and tough. He plays inside and out and is a good rebounder using his body. He can shoot it a little but loves to get downhill and work off the glass. He handles the ball well and plays with great energy.
