I focused primarily on 17U and a little of the 16’s. Everyone was just trying to get better heading into the only summer live period of AAU next week.
Here were some of the junior standouts from AZ and CA:
Brendan Perry SG 6’3 160 La Costa Canyon (WCE SD Tate 16)
-Scoring guard is tougher then he looks and is very skilled. Fiery competitor and can shoot it from deep. Good finishing with his off left hand in traffic. One of the better shooters in the class from the WCE huge program. Plays with a high IQ and is a dangerous scorer.
Matur Dhal C 6’10 185 PHH Prep (PHH 16 Black)
-Long post player moves well end to end. He is a good shot blocker and rebounds well in his area. He can step out and shoot it from elbow and in. He can rip through and score it. He needs more strength and has to be more consistent moving forward.
Nicolas “Nico” Meza SG 6’3 190 Mater Dei Catholic (WCE SD Tate 16)
-Strong scoring guard who has a nice floater game. He can shoot it from deep plus use his thick body to get downhill and score through contact. Very good play-maker. Physical defender and works hard. Seems to play with a chip on his shoulder. On Mexican National team.
Jake TenBerge SF 6’5 175 Chaparral/PHH Prep (PHH 16 Black)
-Highly skilled shooter who can create his own shot. Very clean shot off the catch and from mid-range. Can dribble through traffic and score it. He rebounds well in his area and can improve defending in space. (Pictured)
Steven Cervantes Jr PG 5’10 150 Mesa (AZ Legends 17)
-Feel for the game is really high. His ability to knock down deep shots off the dribble makes him a tough player to cover. He finds teammates easily and is very quick with the ball in his hands. He finds open space in the defense to get his shot off.
Andre Sheehan PG 5’10 140 Agua Fria (AZ Venom Red 16)
-Another lead guard who has a good feel for the game. Very tough competitor and is more of a downhill scorer than deep shooter. Always in attack mode and is playing at a high level despite the score.
Gunner Wooden SG 5’11 145 Liberty (AZ Venom Red 16)
-Long scoring guard has a nice shooting stroke. He uses the floater game smartly and can pull-up from mid-range. He is best off the catch from the 3pt line and can makes plays for others. He will need to start filling in and getting stronger but has upside.
Lual Lual SF 6’4 155 Catalina Foothills (PHH 16 Black)
-A newer player has some nice upside. He moves fluidly around the court and has long arms. He handles the ball well and can get up on the break to dunk the ball. He is quick on defense and can make an occasional perimeter jumper.
