Updated 2020 Rankings Overview
It’s been three years of us evaluating kids both during the high school season and on the grassroots scene, and we have yet another update to our 2020 rankings. We took info from coaches, other media members, and debates between the Prep Hoops VA team to come up with some of the top 150 kids in the state. Remember, these rankings are based on where the kids play high school basketball, they are ranked on projected value at the COLLEGIATE level and they will continue to be updated before and during the high school season.
With that being said, here’s a look at our free preview of the
Changes at the Top
It’s another summer and another elite prospect leaves VA for a national power in IMG Academy in Mark Williams who was slated to become the #1 prospect in the class after his big summer with Boo Williams. Henry Coleman moves up to #2 after dominating the Adidas Gauntlet with Team Loaded VA this summer. New additions include Darius Maddox at #5 who’s transferring to Oak Hill and Burke Smith at #9. The full top 10 can be seen below.
Six Stock Risers
Burke Smith#9 Burke Smith
As far as mid major recruits, none are hotter than Smith who currently holds 15 offers from a litany of programs across the east coast. A high academic kid who keeps getting better, he could get more this week at the NCAA camp at UConn.
#11 Josiah Freeman
Freeman has seen his offers pick up after a solid summer on the UA Circuit with District WAWG. He’s seen recent offers from Manhattan, Rider, Radford and UNCG and currently holds 15 at summer’s end.
#15 Andre Screen
Watching him develop over time has been a pleasure, and Screen is one of three St. Stephen’s St. Agnes players on this list. He pulled recent offers from Akron, Ohio, Delaware and Brown and holds over 20 himself.
#18 Xavier Lipscomb
Another SSSAS kid, Lipscomb didn’t play AAU ball but he took full advantage of the new HS live periods as he picked up offers from Navy, Army, Radford, Buffalo, Iona, ETSU, William & Mary and Howard, just to name a few.
#21 James Berry
The Bishop Ireton wing is a late bloomer who also took advantage of the high school live period picking up five offers from Merrimack, Youngstown State, Mount St. Mary’s, Towson and Quinnipiac.
#29 Jamal Barnes
The last of the SSSAS kids, Barnes took a big leap as he has a much more important role for the team this year. Entering the summer with little interest, he’s leaving with offers from a number of schools including Navy and Army.
Division One Sleepers
Karl Chavis#22 Sasha Glushkov
The 6’11” Russian from Blue Ridge didn’t play on a shoe company team but has shown vast improvement and has physical tools you can’t find in a lot of guys. The stretch five can shoot the three-ball and is an above average athlete, and could be a long term steal with a redshirt year.
#23 Jordan Battle
The Norfolk Collegiate guard came off the bench and gave good minutes for Boo Williams this summer, and it baffles me he’s still without an offer. A highly productive and energetic guard who can do a little of everything, his production and competitive spirit warrants looks from low and mid division one programs.
#26 Kenard Richardson
He’s been great at Varina for three years, and he’s the perfect fit for a MEAC or Big South type of program. He’s tough and gritty, defends like a madman and has the strength to finish through traffic and also has a very good midrange game.
#28 Karl Chavis
He’s a tweener at 6’6” but Chavis has the game of a new style big man who can run the floor and guard multiple positions. He’s extremely bouncy and is all over the glass, he can protect the rim help side and he doesn’t need the ball in his hands very much to make plays offensively.
#30 Klemen Vuga
Not many people know about the euro big man from VES but he’s extremely talented and a walking mismatch. At 6’9” he can play inside-out, he can put it on the deck and shoot from deep and has a lot of upside as he continues to adapt to the style of play over here.
#33 Chaunce Jenkins
One of the most improved players in the state and a late bloomer, Jenkins picked up an offer from Robert Morris and more should come. He may need a prep or redshirt year but he has good physical tools at 6’4”, he’s athletic and plays hard and has worked hard to get where he is and will continue to work at the next level as well.
