Guys who can create their own shot, move with out the ball, read screens, quick releases and deep range. To find kids with all those qualifications narrows the search down. Every kid can be a shooter, but can you be an elite shooter by mastering these traits. Here are some of the kids who I thought did just that.
Carter Brown-6’3/SG- 2020- Ogallala HS- NLHA Gaddis.
Carter was the most electrifying shooter I saw on Saturday. He was in range as soon as he crossed half court. Carter showcased high IQ on how to read the defense and how to come off screens. He elevates on his jump shot with a release quick enough to hit contested shots. Great handles, pushes the ball in transition. He’s at his best in the half court moving or spotting up. Great give and go player, knows he can get it back after the pass if he cuts hard. On a team full of shooters, I’m excited to see how Sunday goes.
Easton Hunter- 6’3/SG- 2020- Andale HS- NLHA Gaddis.
Another NLHA player, Easton has been lighting the nets up all summer. As his stock continues to rise, coaches are starting to whisper his name when he steps on the court. A competitor with a pure jump shot. Quick release with a high follow-through makes it hard for defenses to block his shot. Moves with a purpose off the ball, knows how to come off screens. Always in a position ready to shoot or score. Some kids just have the “it” factor and after you watch a few minutes of Easton play, you know he’s one of them.
Terrell Kabala- 6’0/PG-SG/ 2020- Webb City HS- Victory Ministry.
Terrell is an all around player and can do it all. He makes the “shooters” list due to the fact he can get his shot off in many ways. Very mobile with the ball in his hands. Terrell will shake you off him to get his shot up. Being able to elevate above defenders is what he does best. He is athletic enough to hit you with a step back or a side step to get his shot off. Even his misses look like their going in, once you get to that level, an elite shooter you are. Looking for his stock to continue to rise being a PG with a shot, will always bump you up on any coaches list.
Jayden Dunn- 6’3/SG-2020 Southlake Carol HS- Texas Elite.
A shooter in Jayden, he caught my eye both Friday and Saturday. Just a consistent player who coaches can count on to knock a few threes down in each game. Athletic, moves with out the ball and pushes the ball into his shot, in transition. Long arms, with an elevated shot, means it’s going to be hard for defenses to alter his shot. I like Jayden’s game, I’m sure I’m not the only coach to think highly on him, look for his stock to rise.
Conner Calavan- 6’3/SG-2020 Ft.Gibson HS- Tulsa Hawks Elite.
Conner can flat out shoot the ball. Burning the nets all summer and all last school season, he isn’t slowing up. Very heady ball player that steps in the gym with immediate range. I’ve never seen him take a shot off balance or forced. He understands how to let the game come to him. Being able to come off screens and read the defense is a big trait, us college coaches want to see and Calavan has that. He always seems to be open in transition, give credit to Conner, because all that’s telling me is, he don’t stop moving. He can create his shot off the dribble, on the move, with out the ball, in transition and out of a time out. Look for offers to start rolling in soon.
Kendural Jolly- 5’11/PG 2020- Putnam City Original- Team Buddy Buckets.
No surprise here, as Jolly should make every “Top Shooters” list. He’s had a great summer with Team Buddy Buckets and I expect his stock to continue to rise. I’ve seen a lot of shooters this summer and I would have to say Jolly is the only player I’ve seen heat up so fast from behind the arch. I’ve seen this kid rattle off multiple 3’s in a roll, when his team needed him the most, whether it’s team camp or summer ball. A fun player to watch, his stock is still rising.
