Deandre Seward & Jyre McCloud (Leesburg)
A 2020 big man for the Yellow Jackets, Seward was a force on the defensive end, chasing down ball-handlers in-transition for blocks at the rim. Never took a play off on that side of the ball. On offense, he did damage in the paint, muscling inside to get off easy looks at the cup.
McCloud, another 2020 guy who appears to be around 6’5”, has a solid handle on the rock & can lead the fast-break. McCloud is a wing who, like Seward, operates well in the paint. The wingspan makes it tough for defenders to challenge his shot attempts in that area. Plays with a solid motor. This tandem should be very key for Leesburg come November.
Nas Mann, David Koubek, Mac Harris (The Villages)
A rising junior, Nas is emerging himself as one of the primary scoring options for the Buffalo, going forth. He can deliver in a lot of ways. Nas is fearless going to the rim, has the ability to finish strong with a slam or absorb contact on the way to an and-one. His long-ball is starting to fall more consistently, as well. On defense, his intensity creates the opportunity to force steals. Nas recently received his first offer from Florida College in Temple Terrace, FL. No doubt that it’ll be the first of many.
His teammates, rising seniors Koubek & Harris, are both going to be assets from the three the way they shot the ball, yesterday. Koubek nailed four treys in the first half of their quarterfinal matchup and was consistent all day, while Harris hit from outside used the pump-fake well to freeze defenders and get into the midrange area for smooth jumpers. I like the good weight that Harris has put on. If the Villages ever went small for a lineup, Harris could be the guy that operates off-the-block, and makes defenders pay.
Nate Mikell & Joe Poyser (Wildwood)
This duo has two more years to make some great things happen as Wildcats. These 2021 wings can be the catalyst towards another state title push. Mikell is a proven outside shooter who helped get the ‘Cats back into the game with the three ball. He has a knack for staying calm under pressure, and never appearing rattled with the game is tight,
Poyser was all over the place, hitting his long-balls, but also fought in the paint for and-ones and tough layups. What really got me was his energy on the defensive end. Poyser challenged every shot in front of him, some resulted into some tipped-balls and altered shots. On the inbounds play, he was great at timing when to make a swipe to knock the ball away. When in the full-court trap, Poyser forced more steals than anyone.
Jacari White & Dennis Warner (Olympia)
To round out the day, I have to give a shoutout this bulldog of a point guard, 2021’s Dennis Warner. Talk about a guy who will straight-up outmuscle you, Warner imposed his will on the rebounding glass and make it a point to battle in the paint on offense to draw fouls. Probably one of the strongest point guards in the Orlando area, right now.
Jacari White, a 2021 wing who played big despite having a solid-sized knee brace on, scored in bunches on Sunday. He can take you to the rim and finish & stop-short for a nice floater, stroke the 14-18 foot midrange jumper, or take it deep with a trey. His transition defense was great to see, did a great job at beating opponents to certain spots before they had a shot at an easy lay up. White timed his contests just right in an effort to get a blocked jumper.
