Here, Prep Hoops Kansas takes a look at several players who raised their profile with strong performances on Friday.
14 — Whitley Cooper, 5’11, PG, 2022, Olathe South, Team KC Black @Cooperwhitley_6 (pictured)
We really like Cooper’s game — he is a crafty point guard who handles it well and can run an offense, and showed the ability to break down opponents off the bounce and create offense for his team. He is a pass first player who can also score when necessary and is a capable outside shooter who is a consistent threat from behind the stripe.
4-Amarion Johnson, 5’10, G, 2023, Olathe South, Drive 5
An athletic guard who plays great full court defense. He defends the ball and makes like difficult for the opposing point guard. He has a nice feel for the ball and isn’t easily shaken. He can handle it as well and has great quickness and is great at recovering plays.
13 — Jaoao Ramirez, 6’6, G/F, 2022, Bishop Seabury, KC Run GMC @jujuramirez14
A rising prospect out of Lawrence, Kansas’ Bishop Seabury, Jaoao “JuJu” Ramirez recently picked up his first offer from Division I program Denver University. Blessed with terrific size, Ramirez has a diverse skill set and is a prototypical modern wing player, able to shoot the 3 with a smooth left handed shooting stroke, can put the ball on the floor and defend multiple positions.
1 — Damar’e Smith, PG, 2022, Shawnee Mission Northwest, KC Run GMC 15U
Blessed with elite speed and quickness, Smith is a tough match-up for opponents as they struggle to keep the talented guard in front of them. He is a dynamic ball handler with the ability to get past defenders and to the basket. Mix in good floor general skills and the ability to shoot from distance, well beyond the 3-point arc, and Smith is among the state’s top young guards.
3-Aidan Wing, 6’3, F, 2023, Bishop Miege, Drive 5
A skilled forward who uses his speed and hustle to his advantage. He has a smooth up and under layup around the basket and catches people looking and connects. He is very physical inside and keeps a eye on his opponents and a body close.
