Here were some of the standout guards at the 16U level from pool play Friday and Saturday
Jackson Hilton, Pentagon Schoolers Begeman
Hilton was one of the best players in the entire tournament. The 6-foot-2 swingman from Brandon Valley was a two-way stud for the Schoolers. His size and strength allow him to bully defenders on his way to the rim, he was terrific finishing around the rim and either drawing fouls or scoring through contact. When he gets in transition, he’s going to score and his jumper was smooth. On the defensive end, he’s great at not allowing any dribble penetration and he’s disruptive on and off the ball.
Shea Carroll, ND Attack Green
Carroll’s a heady point guard who does a great job balancing looking for his teammates and creating offense for himself. His court vision is very good and while he’s undersized even for a point guard, he’s quick and slippery and can get into gaps like few guys can. His passing is a huge plus but he’s also a terrific ball handler and knockdown shooter when he can spot up.
Tucker Large, Pentagon Schoolers Begeman
Large was a sparkplug for Schoolers Begeman over the weekend, providing awesome defense both on and off the ball. He’s a guy who looks to get into his man and give them no space and he’s feisty as a help defender. I liked how he ran the team on the offensive end, finding guys in transition or keeping the ball moving in the halfcourt. He showed the ability to break defenses down and get to the paint and his passing vision was impressive.
Caleb Dunfield, ND Attack Blue
Dunfield was a bright spot for ND Attack Blue over the weekend, showing a scoring punch that many teams in Class B North Dakota are well aware of. He’s a terrific outside shooter but also has the juice to get to the rim and finish in traffic. He’s a solid secondary playmaker as well. It’s going to be hard for teams to defend him this winter.
Jayce Lowman, ND Attack Green
Lowman is a breakout candidate next winter at Mandan and he showed he’s capable of playing a big role this past weekend. The 6-foot swingman is a knockdown shooter and understands how to move without the ball to get open. He’s a smart passer when he has to put the ball on the floor and his length is an asset for him on the defensive end.
Austin Lake, SD Venom
Lake is a nice-looking two way player for SD Venom and his ability to run a team and create offense make him a guy to watch. He’s got good speed and burst and showed over the weekend that he can get to the paint and I liked his defensive intensity on the ball. He provides consistent pressure at the point and did a good job playing man and ball when in help situations.
