Here were some of the standout forwards at the 16U level from pool play Friday and Saturday
Teyghan Hovland, MN Lightning Studer
Hovland was one of the best players at the 16U level all weekend, using his athleticism and energy to produce consistently on both ends of the court. Hovland is instinctive and aggressive on the defensive end and it shows as he’s able to lock down his man while also applying superb help. He’s very good defending in broken play situations and forces turnovers at a high rate. He’s a very good slasher and mid-range scorer and can finish effectively over length. Definitely a guy to keep an eye on out of Austin.
Kael Hermanstrofer, MN Select Edwards
Hermanstrofer was a force for Select Edwards at times over the weekend. The 6-foot-3 Medford product is active on the glass and plays with a physicality that few guys can bring. His skill level is solid too, as he showed a smooth spot-up 3-point jumper. He’s active off the ball too, scoring and creating chances for teammates as a hard cutter.
Terence Larmouth, Heat Wiley
Larmouth was a real nice bright spot for Heat Wiley, showcasing a whole batch of skills from the forward position. His length and athleticism allow him to defend wings and bigs alike and his ability to grab-and-go on the glass can put opposing defenses in a bind. His outside shot wasn’t on display a whole lot but he showed the ability to get into the paint and finish through traffic throughout the weekend.
Caleb Bacon, MN Lightning Studer
Bacon is from Lake Mills Iowa and he was terrific for Lightning Studer over the weekend. His energy on both ends of the floor is infectious and his toughness and persistence on the offensive glass allows him to produce without needing a lot of shots. He’s perfectly capable of generating his own shot and shots for others though too, and with his size and ability to handle the ball, he’s a bit of a mismatch for most guards and forwards alike.
Zach Wenthe, Fury Syverson
Wenthe is all effort all the time. He’s long and skilled and does a really nice job fighting for position to be a factor on the offensive glass. His passing ability fits in nicely with the rest of that Fury team and his mobility makes him hard to keep track of for opposing big men. He’s not the biggest or strongest post but he plays physical and if he fills out, he’ll be a double-double waiting to happen with the way he runs the floor and works.
