Here are the Sophomores who have boosted their stock in my eyes over the course of the month.
Turrell Cleaves Turrell Cleaves 6'4" | SG Jeffersontown | 2022 State KY , Butler – Since the first time I saw him play, I could see the potential in Cleaves but his motor wasn’t always running. But it looks like Turrell is turning the corner and becoming more mature and a more complete player. There aren’t many kids in the 2022 class who can elevate on their jump shot like Cleaves does and he looks the part of a future D1 player as long as he can start gaining strength.
Robby Todd Robby Todd 6'7" | PF Madison Central | 2022 State KY , Dunbar – Like Cleaves, Todd has yet to turn 15 despite the fact that he is a month away from being a Sophomore in high school. Already 6’6, the biggest asset I’ve seen Todd show is his motor. He plays hard and never gives up on a play. As he becomes a better athlete, Robby is going to be a big time rebounder and has a high ceiling thanks to his size and age.
Tim Hall Tim Hall 6'6" | PF Westminster Catawba | 2023 State SC , Dunbar – Another sophomore at Dunbar, Hall is already highly ranked but continues to impress with a crazy high motor and great athleticism. This past weekend he had a tough layup then stole the inbounds pass and hit a corner 3. It was a very impressive sequence for the Dunbar Bulldog. The future is bright for Tim and the Dunbar program.
Jerone Morton Jerone Morton 6'3" | SG George Rogers Clark | 2023 State KY , George Rogers Clark – Another player who is already highly ranked but could be moving up, Morton is a smooth lefty who can score the ball really well. He’s playing on the ball as a point guard but his college future is likely as a combo guard or a shooting guard. Jerone has the trust of his coach and is being given the keys to the GRC offense at a young age.
Jordan Akal Jordan Akal 6'1" | PG Harlan | 2022 State KY , Harlan – Jordan was one of the biggest surprises at the Mack, Miller and Lofton event when he scored at will over the course of the weekend. Akal has grown a few inches in the last calendar year and he keeps improving athletically. When the rankings update this month, look for Akal to be in the mix as the top point guard in 2022.
Jackson Twombly Jackson Twombly 6'7" | PF Woodford County | 2022 State KY , Frankfort – Jackson has the ability to score the ball on the block but has shown that he can knock down perimeter jumpers as well over the course of the summer. Twombly is never going to blow anyone away with athleticism but he plays hard and smart and is the type of player who just gets things done on the court.
Christian Spaulding, Eastern – Spaulding is going to make a name for himself over the next year. I talked with multiple college coaches who were impressed with his size and IQ as a point guard at the Collins event. With a loaded 2022 group at Eastern, look for them to be 7th region contenders for the next 3 years.
Jack Gohmann Jack Gohmann 6'3" | SG Lexington Catholic | 2022 State KY , Lexington Catholic – Jack was one of the most impressive players I watched in June, regardless of class. Gohmann is skilled and has good size for a combo guard. He scored a lot of points in the games I saw him in this past month and looks to be a very capable second scoer for Lexington Catholic this year.
