Teams that participated in this event came from across the country and some even traveled internationally to compete. Over the weekend, hundreds of basketball games took place showcasing incredible teams, spectacular players, and interesting styles of play.
I attended this tournament to watch the boys’ varsity division. There were 3 different varsity divisions which included around 48 teams. Teams that attended were from some of the Utah high schools while others were AAU club teams. Some teams that attended were: Freemont, Olympus, Timpview, Wasatch, Alta, PGHoops, Melbourne Warriors, K-town, and many more. Some programs had multiple teams for the same school or club.
The divisions broke down into three sections: blue, red, and green. Each bracket started off with a group of play in games which then determined the bracket breakdown. All three brackets included a gold section and a silver section. Gold was the championship bracket and silver eras the consolation. The blue bracket was where the real competition was. These were the cream of the crop, in this tournament. Therefore, I spent most of my time following these teams and this particular bracket, allowing me to get a good feel for the teams.
In the blue-gold bracket, PGHoops took home the championship, beating Freemont in the finals, 73-71. It was an incredible game, with fantastic play and intensity coming from both teams. Alta finished 3rd in the blue-gold bracket with a win over Timpview, 68-54. Both teams had a good showing throughout the weekend. Most of the teams in this bracket were evenly matched, but sometimes shots wouldn’t fall or calls didn’t go their way. In the consolation bracket for the blue division, Herriman took first place with a very close win over Bingham, 76-71. Both teams showed incredible attitude and skill, not letting their first loss affect them and continuing to move forward through the tourney. Third place went to Layton, who had a very decisive victory over Olympus, 88-75.
This weekend was an incredible showcase for many teams, especially those in Utah high school basketball. I have great anticipation for the 2019-20 UHSAA basketball season.
