It featured teams from across the state as well as teams from West Virginia and North Carolina, and there was plenty of talent throughout the camp. I was there on Saturday, and here’s a list of kids that stood out when I was there.
Daniel Mbangue | 6’3” G/F | Faifax 2020
If I’m a small school I’m not only taking a hard look at Mbangue, I’m making him a priority because of his mix of size, skill and versatility. The 6’3” do-it-all and position less guy has a great build and is a good athlete, he can play almost every position on the floor and gets it done on both ends of the floor as well. He’s smart, he plays hard, he seems very coachable and is willing to do multiple things and accept different roles to help his team win.
Azaiyah Roberts | 6’4” F | Princess Anne 2020
Another versatile guy that small schools should be all over, Roberts has an inside-out kind of game where he can shoot the basketball and can bully smaller guys in the post. After some early foul trouble that hindered him a bit, Roberts got it going in the second half as he made shots from all three levels, rebounded the basketball on both ends of the floor and did a great job running the floor and taking advantage of his opportunities without needing the ball in his hands that much.
Jackson Threadgill | 6’5” WG | Davidson Day 2020
A part of a very talented and well coached Davidson Day group that features multiple scholarship level kids, Threadgill was one of the favorites at the event for coaches all around. He has good size on the wing, he can shoot the basketball from deep and from the midrange and he moves well without the ball and can get to his spots in limited dribbles. He holds a slew of low and mid major offers, and with his high IQ for the game and ability to impact in it multiple ways he could be a possible steal for whomever can land him.
CJ Huntley | 6’9” PF/C | Davidson Day 2020
Another Davidson Day senior that’s seen a ton of recruitment recently, Huntley followed up a great weekend at Blue Ridge last week with another stellar few performances at U of R when I watched him yesterday. He has good size in the post and while he needs to fill out he does a great job of boxing out and fighting around box outs. By far his best attribute is his ability to step out and play on the perimeter as he has good touch out to the three-point line and he’s a good passer as a guy who could fit nicely into a Princeton style or 5-out style of play.
Terry White | 5’11” PG | Grafton 2020
The latest in a long line of talented Grafton lead guards, White isn’t the biggest or most athletic guy but he knows how to play and plays the game the right way. He competes on both ends of the floor, he’s a natural leader who gets them into their stuff effortlessly and he can create and make shots from all three levels. He’s able to play on and off the basketball, he has good feel as a playmaker and he can fill it up in bunches when he gets it going.
Mac McDonald | 6’2” WG | Collegiate 2021
McDonald continues to show improvement and a bright future, and if I’m a college coach I wouldn’t waste anymore time getting to know this kid. He’s grown a little over the past two years both physically and as a player, and he stepped up big in clutch situations with a game winning buzzer beater against Hermitage, and he showed the ability to compete against division one talent as he poured in 30 in their loss to Davidson Day. He’s a lights out shooter with good confidence and form off the catch, and he’s improved his ability to create off the bounce and handle against pressure as well.
Caleb Kenney | 6’5” F | Douglas Freeman 2021
Another guy who continues to prove himself and college coaches need to get on, Kenney should be one of the most productive guys in the Richmond area this year. The big bodied lefty is super versatile offensively as he showed the ability to finish at all three levels and a much improved ability to hit the pull-up going both ways. He’s long and athletic, he can guard and play multiple positions and while he’s one of the bigger guys on his team and plays in the post he’s shown that he can play all over the floor and impact the game in many different ways.
Bryce Alfino | 6’4” W | Davidson Day 2021
Alfino rounds out a trio of DD prospects that are getting recruited at the division one level, and he’s the young one with a chance to continue to improve and see his recruitment take off likely. He has a solid build at 6’4”, he’s a smooth and natural athlete and while he isn’t super explosive around the rim he’s able to get to his spots and make shots from all over the floor. He plays well within their system and seems to understand the game very well, and he found a way to make an impact on both ends and made some tough shots throughout the day.
Neil Hill | 6’3” G/F | James River 2021
The player I came away liking that I didn’t know very much about before, Hill showed a good all-around game and a high motor as he played all over the floor for JR and played hard in every facet. He has a versatile game as he was able to play and guard both on the perimeter and in the post, he was aggressive attacking the basket, he showed the ability to make shots and showed he has a good IQ and can make others better. He’ll be a key cog for a solid JR team this year.
Brandon Jenkins | 5’9” PG | James River 2021
Going along with guys who should have big seasons for JR this year, Jenkins is a guy who was very tough to guard off the bounce with his mix of quickness and shotmaking ability. The 5’9” guard not only can blow by almost on the court with the ball in his hands, he also showed the ability to create space off the bounce and make shots from all three levels. Defensively he gets underneath ball handlers and makes them uncomfortable, and he showed an extra gear that other guards simply don’t have.
Kanye Clary | 5’11” PG | Princess Anne 2022
When it comes to the best guards that I saw in attendance, Clary may have been the top one regardless of class at the event. First off, the PA lead guard has grown as I was looking up at him in my interview and stands at a legit 5’11” now, and he’s already cut up and very strong for a kid his age. He has great quickness and end-to-end speed, he’s shifty off the bounce and lives in the lane, he showed great vision and court awareness and he showed improvement in his jump shot as well. He’s a dual threat PG that will be one of the 757 best and projects to be a division one kid, just waiting to see how he continues to grow and develop to see what level he’ll end up at.
Wendell Tomlin | 6’5” F | Benedictine 2022
A name that coaches should get to know ASAP, Tomlin is oozing with potential and as he continues to fill out and develop he’ll have a chance to be a versatile guy who can play all over the floor. He has great length that allows him to make an impact in multiple ways defensively, he’s a fluid athlete who can run the floor and he’s able to create his own shot and make shots on the perimeter. He’ll be one to watch grow and develop over time, and his coach has been impressed with his work ethic and improvement already.
Curtis Allen | 6’2” G/F | Prince George 2022
After watching him have a stellar performance in the LC Bird Summer League, Allen had another good showing in the in the U of R camp as he showed his ability to shoot the basketball at a high clip. He has a solid build at 6’2” which allows him to guard both on the perimeter and in the post, and not only is his shot consistent from deep he also has a ton of arc on it that allows him to get it off without a ton of space and shoot it over top of others. Since he already has that part of the game down, he’ll just have to continue to develop the other aspects to round out and he should be an impressive prospect moving forward.
