There is a lot of time prior to the start of the season for teams to improve. However, it would take a lot to dethrone the top dog in this region. With that said, there is room for the rest of the teams in this region to improve their stock.
1. Cesar Chavez
Not only is Cesar Chavez the top ranked team in this region, they are the most likely to win the 6A state title in my book. TyTy Washington has taken huge steps forward. He has gone from a prospect who many concerned a D1 prospect to a guy who is receiving mid to high major interest and offers.
Washington has the ability to lead the entire state in scoring as well as 6A. His elite mid-range jumper has morphed into him becoming an elite scorer from all three levels.
In addition to Washington, Chavez has Ricardo Sarmiento, who has proven that he can be a lock down defender as well as a knock down shooter. In addition to Sarmiento, Chavez will welcome the addition of incoming freshman, Tru Washington. Tru is going to provide the team with a lengthy, athletic wing who can help Sarmiento and TyTy Washington with the scoring.
2. Tucson
From this point on, it is far game for anyone. However, Tucson was clearly the second best team in this region last year, and they bring back some key prospects who will look to keep them near the top once again.
Mark Hunter ran the show for the group last year. Hunter led the team in assists while finishing second in rebounding and third in scoring. His ability to make plays in an array of ways will aid Tucson in being competitive once again.
Further, Junior to be, Kaden Luna was extremely productive in his role last year. With some talented upperclassmen graduating, Luna will look to play an even bigger role this upcoming season.
3. Trevor Browne
Brown finished third in this region last year as well and looks to be on pace to finish in a similar spot this upcoming season. Ericsson Kannah and Vincen Wagner both earned all-region honorable mention per the AIA and will be back to compete this upcoming season.
Kannah and Wagner as well as the rest of the Trevor Browne team should feel confident that they can compete in this region as it is quite open. It will be difficulty for any team in this region to challenge Chavez, who brings back most of their talent as well as key additions and won this region last year and only had one game within ten points. However, with Kannah and Wagner, Browne should be able to be in the top three and potentially make it into the play-in games.
