Recruiting Report: Matt Rogers (2020)
Matt Rogers has clearly been one of the biggest local stock risers so far this summer. He’s received offers from Boston University, Fairfield, UMass Lowell, Binghamton, and Air Force since impressing at DMV Live II. Rogers has been fine tuning his craft both on and off the court, and it has certainly paid dividends. During a recent interview with Prep Hoops, he discussed the maturation of his overall game, his recruitment, and much more.
PH: The first thing that stands out about your overall game is how vocal you are on the court. Why do you think that’s important?
MR: “If your’e not vocal there will be a lot of mismatches, a lot of switches not communicated. A lot fo people can get dunked on. You just need to talk on the court. Talk on matchups. If your’e not talking, you’re not going to go far. You need to talk at the next level, so that’s what I do out here. Teach these young guys how to talk.”
PH: You look a lot more nimble out there these days. What have you done to improve your fitness?
MR: “I’ve been getting up early, running a 2 mile every morning. Trying to get that conditioning in because I’m have to play a lot of minutes this year. We lost a lot of seniors last year, so I got to play a lot more minutes. Gotta be conditioned.”
PH: Talk about the development of your offensive game
MR: “I’ve been in the gym. I’ve been in the gym with my AAU Coach, James (Lee). Here at Goretti, every morning we’ve been working out. Getting in skill work, shots up. So that’s how my offensive game improved. I’ve been in the gym every day.”
PH: What are you working on now?
MR: “The one dribble-pull-up. Thats my key shot. I like that one dribble-pull-up. And just finishes around the rim. Also boxing out, and rebounding. That’s a big key. We don’t have a lot oof big guys this year so I’ve got to box out more.”
PH: What’s your recruitment been like?
MR: “Recently, I’ve had Lafayette, American, Loyola. A lot of Patriot League Schools.”
PH: What’s your GPA and SAT Score?
MR: “3.3 GPA, 1150 SAT.”
PH: What are the important factors you consider when evaluating college options?
MR: “I haven’t really been to a lot of schools, but I’m just thinking the best fit for my play style. The size matters to me, but it doesn’t matter where its located. So that’s about it.”
PH: What’s your preferred play style?
MR: “I’m more of a motion guy. I like moving the ball a lot. I like curling a lot. Curls and flares. Moving a lot, moving the ball a lot. That’s my play style.”
