Recruiting Report: Jordan Oates (2020)
Jordan Oates, a class of 2020 forward from Atholton High School, just completed a productive weekend at the DC JamFest with Maryland 3D. At 6-foot-4, 210 pounds, Oates is a versatile forward who can guard several positions and shoot it from long range but also score inside against smaller defenders. One other thing he does exceptionally well is rebound.
“I’m really strong on rebounding,” Oates explained during a recent interview with Prep Hoops. “That’s really one of my main focuses. You can always do that when you’re not hitting shots.”
Oates is used to physical play inside. He mentioned always being bigger than other kids when he was younger and playing the center position in his early days. While he is comfortable finishing in traffic, Oates admits his back-to-the basket game could use some refining. Right now, one of his main strengths offensively is how well he shoots it.
“I’ve had it for a good minute, but I’ve also been working on it,” said Oates of his jump shot. “I gotta work on my jump shot off the dribble, but I can catch and shoot.”
Ball-handling and learning how to break down defenders easier off the dribble are some other things Oates says he’s working on. Klay Thompson and Kawhi Leonard are two players he likes to watch and emulate. Right now, a bevy of Division Three programs such as Washington College, Hood College, and Stevenson are actively recruiting Oates, who said he might want to study engineering.
What are his goals?
“To do really well at the next level, keep up my hard work, and keep up my grades. Because that will get me far.”
