Recruiting Report: Day’sJuan Waters (2021)
A hidden gem in the local 2021 class, Day’sJuan Waters had a productive summer with DC Premier and is on the verge of breaking out at Good Counsel. The 6-foot-3 wing closed out his sophomore campaign in style and hopes to parlay that into a productive junior season.
“I’m trying to show college coaches I can play every position they need me to play. I work hard on defense. I work hard on offense,” Waters said during a recent interview with Prep Hoops.
Aside from his ability to score effortlessly from all three levels, which includes getting to the foul line regularly, Waters has shown that he can rebound very well from his position. On a talented young roster at Good Counsel, Waters is one of the main scorers, but has found other ways to impact the game when he’s not putting the ball in the basket.
“I always want the boards. I feel like it helps us win games,” he explained. “So when I see my teammate put up a shot, I crash right away. Because I know my teammates are going to get back, and then I sprint back on defense.”
Waters has certainly improved at attacking the basket in recent months, but is working on reading the defense better and changing speeds. He has worked hard to diversify his offensive arsenal, but when all else fails, he goes to work in the mid-post where he excels at creating space for his own shot. Waters credits a family member who has helped him get comfortable with his go-to moves.
“My stepdad played basketball overseas,” Waters stated. “So when he comes down for the summer I work out with him.”
With a 3.4 GPA, Waters should have no shortage of options to consider at the college level. In fact, several division one programs have reached out and expressed interest. Yale, Rhode Island, Temple, Siena, Radford, and Stony Brook are among those schools.
What can Waters bring to a college program?
“I can bring my scoring ability. Leadership, getting my guys together. Rebounding, and help defense.”
