Playing for Missouri Class 3 St. Michael the Archangel, 2020 wing Ben Palacios has flown under the radar at times throughout his high school career, but that is changing this summer.
A talented 6’4, 183-pound wing player, Palacios has put together a strong offseason with Marcus Denmon Elite and has seen his stock take off in the process. He has a smooth game and is able to score at all three levels. He can break down defenses with the bounce with a crafty game off the dribble and can knock down outside shots or get all the way to the basket.
“I have not always been the fastest or most athletic kid to play so I had to become extremely skilled and crafty,” he says. “So I take pride in using all of the skills that I have worked so hard to master and I use my brain when I’m outmatched in physical characteristics.”
Palacios recently represented his country as part of the NBAs Basketball Without Borders Camp and has helped Marcus Denmon Elite put together a big summer playing alongside several of the KC area’s top rising senior players.
“This year with my summer team has been the most fun by far,” Palacios says. “We have really messed with one another and that has allowed us to win a couple tournaments this season. It has been the most fun by far. We have really messed with one another and that has allowed us to win a couple tournaments this season. It has prepared me by really fueling my work ethic and I have acquired strong winners mentality. I’ll do whatever it takes to win the game.
“I have really worked on my range as well as finishes and mid range game because at the next level I will have to be able to finish with big men contesting my shots in the paint. I have also worked very hard to improve my defense and speed.”
In the second year of the St. Michael basketball program, Palacios helped lead the Guardians to a 17-13 overall, a district title and an upset over favorite Maryville in sectional play. Palacios was named the school’s first all-state performer for his efforts.
“I was very fortunate to be surrounded by a great group of guys,” Palacios said. “We made farther than anyone expected. …”
Palacios says his dad — who played for NCAA Division II program Drury University in Springfield — has had the biggest impact on his game.
“My dad has been my biggest influence on my basketball career.” he says. “He has a lot of experience which has allowed him to guide me and helps me improve over the years.”
A fan of Klay Thompson, Palacios says he enjoys studying his game.
“I really enjoy watching Klay Thompson and studying his footwork when catches and shoots,” Palacios says. “I’ve worked very hard to use the same footwork in my shots.”
