In our 2021 class there were plenty of underclassmen that made some moves on varsity and put themselves in elite status. Here is the top five guards we had on our rankings and why we had them at the top.
Julian Hammond –Cherry Creek
Hammond is the top overall guard in the class as he comes in at the No.2 spot in the class. He can shoot the ball and scores as any as any player in the state as he averages over 20 points a game. He is an improved defender with the ability to shoot it lights out from anywhere on the court. He is a guard that plays a ton off ball and is able to shoot off of screens as well as creating his own. He has a green light for the Bruins and as long as he is aggressive offensively as well as getting better in other parts of his game then it is going to be tough to knock him off of that top spot. With work on his ball handling and vision this year he will be one of the most complete players in the state.
Brennan Rigsby – De Beque
De Beque won the 1A state championship last year with a perfect 25-0 record and a big reason of that is Rigsby who put up a whopping 21.5 points and 9.1 rebounds a game. He almost averaged a double-double from the guard spot and also showcased that he was able to get others involved as well. Rigsby is not just one of those players that are taking his game to the next level because he is in a smaller classification but his run over the summer in various showcases showed that he is able to have that game translate as well as he can put up the same type of production surrounded by some of the better players in the state. Rigsby does a bit of everything and shoots close to 40 percent from beyond the arc so that opens his game up even more. He will look to defend the championship from last year with his teammate and 1A player of the year Wes Ryan right next to him.
RaShawn Wilson – Denver East
Wilson is the first true point guard on the list and he is one of the toughest players in the state to guard due to cat-like speed mixed with next level vision. He penetrates and kicks for easy baskets but is just as liable to tear a team apart for a 20-point game. Last season he averaged 10 points and four assists but what was one of the most eye-opening stats was his 4.1 steals a game which was without a doubt amongst the top of the state. Wilson is a tough nosed defender that uses his body to defend and makes the offensive guy work for every single basket. His play is contagious and his style will translate to the next level. Without Marble on the team next season he should be given the reigns to do whatever it is that he wants. It is good to see him getting back into basketball shape after a health scare and I fully expect him to be a name that everyone will know by the end of the year.
Wes Ryan – De Beque
Although it is Rigsby that gets all of the attention it was Ryan that won the 1A player of the year as he put up 19.7 points and 6.5 rebounds. Both players are really good players and their classification does not tell the story of how they are able to take over in games. They have chemistry on the court and often times know where the other is going to be. Ryan is a two-way player with good size and is able to take over inside while getting to the lane and is also capable of letting it fly from outside. Had it have been for De Beque blowing teams out his numbers would have been even better. Ryan is a player that will have to jump onto the grassroots scene if he wants the respect that he deserves but for now he is one of our top five guards in the state on a team that will surely be the favorites next season.
Trevaughn Williams – Columbine
Williams is one of the most explosive players in the state and with athleticism like he has it is going to be difficult to slow him down any time soon. He gets off the ground so easily and whenever a guard throws it up there he is going to go up there and going to get it. Williams is a high upside player that penetrates and is best used as a slasher. He is improving on his shooting and ball handling after seeing him this summer and with Luke O Brien by his side next season it looks as if Columbine finally has a chance to make some noise. Last season he only averaged seven points and just over three rebounds a game so he will have his work cut out for him this season if he wants to continue being amongst the top of the class. I fully expect him to make plenty of electric plays this season and jump more onto the scene after a strong summer.
