Continue ReadingThe Class of 2021 will be one of the most talented groups the state has seen in quite some time and this summer, another rising junior came onto the scene in Nick Zuro. The strong 6-foot-7, 210-pound forward is a newcomer at South Salem High School, but he’s actually not totally new. Zuro will be suiting up as a high school varsity player for the first time in Oregon but the truth of the matter is he’s simply come back from where he started.
“I used to live here when I was growing up, but there’s been a lot of changes with my family and the scenery,” Zuro said. “Right now my family is in Ohio and I’ve lived in Tennessee the past six months but I’ve moved back here to play with South Salem. I love how there’s a great coach and atmosphere here at South Salem and I’m just happy to be a part of it.”
A simple look at Zuro and there’s no question he passes the look test. He’s built like a tank, runs the floor extremely well, and is skilled around the hoop. In June ball with South Salem, the lefty not only finishes at the rim but can also step out, shoot the ball, and create off of the dribble.
“I feel like my game has come along a lot since I was younger – I’ve definitely gotten stronger, taller, and I’m jumping higher,” Zuro said. “I’ve been focusing on my ball-handling as I’ve been transitioning my game over the past year. I’m trying to turn into more of a three. I can run the court and I’m really good in transition.”
Zuro is no stranger to high-level competition. He played summer ball with Hoop Salem’s 16U squad but in the spring he ran with adidas sponsored Team WHBH. There he picked up some early collegiate interest including UNC Asheville, but he realizes that things may have to reset a bit now that he’s in Oregon.
“That was back East so I’ll probably get lost on their radar; I’ve got to start over,” Zuro said. “I really want to go to the highest level competition that I can play, but I definitely want to go to a West Coast school.”
Make no mistake – Zuro will be an impact player this upcoming season in 6A. He should step right in at South Salem where his goals are high. “Hopefully we can win league and we’ve come together as a team really well,” Zuro said. “That’s the main goal, but obviously every team wants to win state. We’ll see what happens.”
