But basketball is a team game and for every star player there has to be guys that get him the ball – and Jayden Vranes is the point guard that does the job for Crater. The shifty 5-foot-11, 150-pound rising senior is the trigger man on the offense and with his leadership, the Comets were able to fashion a 6-1 record in Eugene.
“We’ve been putting together a lot of pieces and outputting great numbers and getting wins,” Vranes said. “I’ve been doing really well with running the offense, taking good shots, and feeding Nate (Bittle) the ball down low. I’ve been working the passes in and getting them to him.”
In Eugene, Vranes showed a great motor and really attacked the basket and when he wasn’t dishing it off to his teammate for a dunk, he was scoring his own. Really looking for his own shot isn’t something he normally does, so while he felt he did alright in the spring on the AAU circuit with Team P.U.S.H., it was a bit of a different experience for him.
“With AAU it’s for exposure and it’s more of a selfish thing which sucks because I’m more of a facilitator,” Vranes said. “So it’s hard for me to get mine in AAU because I like to facilitate and that’s not really how AAU works.”
While his style may not necessarily fit what some may be looking for on the circuit, that’s not to say that Vranes has gone unnoticed. It’s hard not to see the effort he puts on the floor, and schools like University of Chicago, Pacific, and Lane CC have been some of the schools that have been in contact with Vranes. He’s keeping all of his options open at this point as he rejoins P.U.S.H. for the final stretch of club ball in July.
“I’m going for the best I can get,” Vranes said. “It’s just beginning for me. I just want to get as much exposure as I can and be the best I can, really.”
Vranes currently ranks as the #32 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2020 rankings.
