Former high school teammate of McDonald, Jared Ward, picked Vol State for his college career. Jared signed in the spring. Both Jared Ward and Jacob McDonald are skilled guys. Ward was more of a scorer last season, whereas Jacob darted around the court with speed and precision. He could shoot too. McDonald dedicated his time to improving. Both April and May saw Jacob McDonald invest heartily.
The July performance reflected the progress he has made.
“I got a nice evaluation from Coach Smith at Lee this weekend,” said Jacob McDonald Monday night. “He told me he thought I was a NAIA player and needed to focus on their elite camps this fall so that’s what I’m going to do.”
Elite camps can be an excellent opportunity or a complete waste of time and money. It truly depends on the specific player and the situation/program with which they elect to camp. Jacob feels Lee is a good option.
“I may go to Lee Camp if Bryan (College) confirms they will attend,” said McDonald. “Coach Smith said he invites them. I will probably go to Trevecca just to get their evaluation. My dad is friends with Coach (Reece) Chamberlain.”
Reece Chamberlain was a first-year assistant coach last winter. Coach Chamberlain played for Belmont University under Rick Byrd in college.
“I realize I’m probably not D2 at this point, but going there for the experience should be valuable. I have several invites from NAIA, but they are not real close so trying to decide which ones to attend. I would like to stay within 3 hours so my family can watch me play.”
Jacob McDonald is scouring the NAIA landscape for the right opportunity.
