While every team won due to their entire team’s efforts, some individual players just stood out a little more, or performed the best throughout the event. Here are the winners and MVP’s of each age group.
15u:
Team Winner: The Truth EYBL 15u
How They Did It: The Truth 15u team steam rolled through the competition in every round, out matching teams athletically and with their talent. In the championship game against California Select, they would have to work a little harder, but would go on to win by double digits with a final score of 81-70. 2023 Donald Jones and 2022 Davion Wright were standout prospects, but one player performed the best out of all of them and this is my 15u MVP.
15u MVP: 2022 Ramel Lloyd Jr.
Ramel used his superior length, athleticism and skill to overpower players at the 15u level. This came as no surprise as he has been on the national scene for years and holds multiple Division 1 offers, but he did not disappoint.
16u:
Team Winner: Coastal Elite Slayers
How They Did It: Coastal Elite has a really solid team top to bottom with Division 1 offered “role players” like 2021 Dexter Stratton. They won each of their bracket game by double digits, but really had to scratch and claw again Utah Premier National is an exciting championship game. They would go on to win 81-80 in a high scoring affair.
16u MVP: 2021 Wayne McKinney
My co-worker Jed Tai out of Oregon told me about Wayne’s ability and his words were not far from the truth. Wayne is not the tallest player on the floor at 5’11, but he was consistently the most impactful player. He is a pesky defender and really attacks the rim with fierce aggression. It makes sense that he holds a handful of Division 1 offers and Wayne is ranked as the third best prospect in Oregon.
17u:
Team Winner: Colorado Titans
How They Did It: The Colorado Titans also blew through the competition, until the title game versus the New Mexico D1 Ambassadors. The Titans’ execution and chemistry top to bottom was unmatched by any team in the entire event. Although they did not have any glaring high major prospect, the team showed that hard work, hustle and team basketball wins in the end. 2020’s Jalen Page and Pete Boyle both played big roles in the team’s success.
17u MVP: While I believe New Mexico’s Ricky Lujan played the best, Colorado’s Owen Koonce was the best player on the winning team and therefore takes home my MVP award for the 17u division. Owen is a very good shooter with a strong frame and high basketball IQ. It is still up in the air as far as what level he will play at in college, whether it be D2 or D1, but some school is going to get a good ball player.
