Standouts
TJ Wainwright, Belmont Shores, Westchester HS, 2021 –
Wainwright averaged a blistering 26 points a game at Pangos Sweet 16. He carried over his focus from Pangos Premier 80 earlier in the week where he started with a 32 pt game in the showcase event. Wainwright is a lefty shooter who possesses a flamethrower in his palm. TJ was hitting jumpers from all over the court and when hot, cannot be stopped. His shooting can be compared to throwing oil on an open hot stove as he was on fire all week.
Carlos Rosario, Veritas Prep, 2020 –
The Veritas Prep product’s game is illustrated with both offense and defense. In the 17U championship game, Rosario used crafty ball handling, smooth athleticism, and his length to get to the rim. He also can hit the 3 ball with regularity. Rosario finished the tournament with a game high 31 pts in the final. His body type and game can be compared to Dejounte Murray.
2019 Unsigned Seniors
Chase Courtney, ICAN All Stars, Hillcrest Prep 2019-
Chase is a very intriguing under the radar big man who has been slept on. Standing in at 6’10” Courtney has potential to be a presence around the rim. Chase possesses strength and mobility. He is strong inside and has the ability to run the floor. Also to his benefit is that he’s finally learning his body and developing aggression around the rim. Courtney also shows signs of being able to space the floor as he shot 51% last year from beyond the arc at Hillcrest. Also worth noting is that Chase’s dad is former NBA pro Joe Courtney. Courtney’s intensity and energy kept him around the league and if the younger Courtney can inherit his mentality, he can develop into an impact player. Schools who take a chance on Chase Courtney may hit the jackpot with a high reward player.
Daylen Williams, ICAN All Stars, Fairfax High School 2019 –
Daylen came off a strong season in which he played the 5 and manned the middle as Fairfax High School was crowned LA City Section Champions. At Pangos Sweet 16, Williams was able to display his other skills. While we all knew Daylen as tremendous rebounder whos plays with poise and toughness inside, he was also able to display his outside shooting and decision making as well. Daylen hit several stepback 3’s each day and constantly made good decisions with the ball. The lefty also possesses NBA bloodlines as he is the son of former NBA pro John Williams.
Diggy Winbush, BTI, Taft High School 2019 –
Diggy is a good lead guard who possesses excellent court vision and playmaking skills. He illustrates an innate ability to penetrate and get into the lane and create for others. While a bit undersized, he is able to make up with his heart and hustle. Diggy played for legendary LA coach Derrick Taylor who has certainly instilled pertinent intangibles into his skillset. Winbush does not take plays off and can energize a team with both his jaw dropping dimes and hustle. Teams who are looking to add a floor general need to take a look at Diggy Winbush.
Sleepers
LJ McClain, Cal Supreme, Lynwood 2020 –
LJ is a power guard who utilizes both strength and quickness to blow by his man and get to the rim at ease. The Lynwood product was able to overpower defenders all weekend long with his drives to the basket and ball handling ability. On fastbreaks, opposing defenders get out of his way rather than take a charge from his bruising body. He also shows signs of being able to stretch the floor as he hit several 3pt shots over the weekend. As his 3pt shot develops, McClain is a prospect worth keeping an eye on.
Justin Gladney, Pangos Premier 17, Fairfax 2020 –
Gladney’s stock is on the increase after his weekend at Pangos Sweet 16. The lefty guard had his craft on full display as he was able to penetrate defenses to get to the rim with his ball handling and mastery of the euro step. Gladney is able to utilize jab steps and change of direction and an assortment of euro steps and side steps to get to the basket. When he is away from the paint, Gladney also shows potential to be a deep threat as he hit a game winner and several 3s every game. Justin is a prospect that has flown under the radar of some but will soon be known to many.
Matt Lee, ARC, Village Christian 2020 –
Matt is a developing all around combo guard who will intrigue many schools and coaches. Lee has a high IQ and is a secondary coach on the floor as he will run plays and also help put teammates in the right position. Lee has a consistent 3pt ball that opponents have to contest. Matt has toughness and will not back down from any challenge. He shows the ability to run different sets and the versatility to be used in any system.
