Headlined by Top 15 prospect Daishen Nix, more than 100 of the top prospects on the West Coast and beyond converged on Firebaugh High for a series of showcase games.
I arrived a little late to the proceedings, but had enough time to see a couple of the games. Here are a couple of the players who don’t have high profiles, but had standout performances in my opinion.
Pangos Premier 80 – Top Sleepers
Koat Keat, 6-10 2022 F, Renaissance Academy
Keat had a big month of June with his high school team, and it carried over to the Premier 80, where he was one of the breakout stars. Few players his size possess the ball skills that Keat does. He can handle the ball on the perimeter, knock down shots and has an impressive passing IQ.
Lee Hubbard III, 6-1 2021 PG, Archbishop Riordan
Sometimes players who “play the right way” get overshadowed at camps. Hubbard is one of those players, but his play translates to winning basketball. He is a true point guard who rarely forces the issue, makes smart decisions and correct reads, and always keeps the ball moving. Defensively, he has quick feet and slides to stay in front of quick guards. A reluctant scorer in this setting, Hubbard knocked down open shots and scored through contact as a last resort.
Justin Scoggin, 6-3 2020 SG, West Salem (OR)
Scoggin continues to elevate his stock, but for many on hand, it was the first time seeing him. He didn’t disappoint, lighting up the nets with his effortless jump shot. But Scoggin also showed he can handle the ball against pressure at the point and make plays for others. Division 2 power Western Oregon is recruiting him in earnest.
Jalen Pitre, 6-7 2021 WF, Gahr
One of the youngest prospects on hand, Pitre doesn’t turn 16 until October, making him younger than some incoming freshmen. And while his recruitment level has been somewhat subdued, it could explode if he continues to build on his performance here. Pitre has great size, length and fluid athleticism on the wing. As his handle continues to improve and he extends his range, he is a prospect that could skyrocket.
