Stock Raisers (Part I)
TJ Wainwright, 2021, Westchester
Those familiar with Southern California hoops know that Wainwright is one of the more potent 3-point shooters in the area. The 6-foot-2 lefty has an awkward-looking release, but it drops through the net more often than not. One of the knocks on the rising junior has been shot selection and he showed Thursday that he’s making strides in discerning a good shot from a bad shot.
Malvin Payero, 2020, Valley Christian
The rising senior plays with an endless amount of positive energy and that translates well to any setting. Payero showed the college coaches in attendance that he’s a high level on-ball defender, vocal leader, good teammate and can slice his way through the defense and score at the rim in transition. The 6-foot-1 point guard has a knack for making winning plays for his team.
Lendl Henderson, 2021, Bakersfield Christian
Henderson’s arrival began back at the Best of SoCal Showcase in the spring where he displayed sharpshooting ability from 3-point range. It was good to see the 6-foot-6 wing in a setting against other players who can match his size and athleticism and then to see him prosper in that setting. Henderson scored in a variety of ways, including getting downhill and ripping through to the cup and stretching the floor to the 3-point line.
Rising junior Lendl Henderson had is 3-point shooting and downhill attacking mentality on display at the Pangos Premier 80.Darius McClain, 2021, Lynwood
McClain has a long, wiry body to pair with fluid athleticism and a good feel for the game. The 6-foot-4 combo guard has the ability to play both on or off the ball because he can create his own shot off the bounce or come off of pin-downs and hit a quick trigger catch-and-shoot triple. The rising junior has the ball skills and feel to play in high ball-screen action.
Ky-mani Pollard, 2020, Westchester
Pollard is the consummate team player. His teammates were confident leaving the point guard duties to him because they knew he’d make the right decision and put them in position to succeed more often than not. The 5-foot-11 senior-to-be played with good pace, limited turnovers and knocked down open shots when they were there.
